Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - What is a "AN/PVS-17"???

I just returned from the desert, and while waiting on an aricraft, I noticed a guy with a small black pelican case marked AN/PVS-17.  Just wondering what was in the case?  I'm familiar with the AN/PVS-14.  Is this just a newer generation of Night Vision?
