I have a VariX-III in 3.5-10x40mm for coyote and deer hunting on a 700 BDL varmint that I am pleased with.

For that application, a VariX II 3-9x40 would work just fine, and cost ALOT less than a VariX III, or any of the more expensive Leupolds... I have a few VariX II's, and one VariX III, and although the III is very nice, it really wasn't necessary - it DOES have some nice features, though...

I'd recommend the VX-II 3-9x40 for that range you specified.  Only down side of that scope is it won't do you much good if you are trying to use it in low light conditions.

Absolutely ZERO chance to see .224 bullet holes at 300yds with a 9x, been there done that...couldn't see .308 bullet holes at 300yds with a 10x...

Also, if the ranges are going to variable from a bench, or in the field the VX-II does not provide target knobs and thus you'd utilize "hold over", which is less precise.

The M1 knobs are top shelf stuff.

I highly prefer the M1 knobs vs. the "Tactical" target knobs.  Just a preference I guess.

I have become somewhat of an optics snob, I guess, I really only look at the M3 and M1 scopes offered by Leupold.

If I were to look at a 3.5-10x40, which I once had, I would look for the LR series in either the M3 or M1 configuration.

I know, I know they are about $200 more, but I really, really like the better adjustment dials on the LR and Mk4 series scopes, and it is worth the $200 to me.
