The proper mounting height for a TriPower will be the same as an Aimpoint. So I think that someone will repond here soon. Do you have a SIR or a swan sleeve? I know that the low mount is really only for mounting on like a RAS II bump. I would say that you need a full or half spacer. Cost really isn't an issue, they are only like $15 a piece. Full or half is more an issue of personal preference in how you like your irons to cowitness.

I will just be mounting it on a flat top. I do have a FF M4 RAS on it, but I really didn't want the optic that far forward. Trijicon lists 2 different spacers on their website, I just did not know if I needed a spacer or not.

Yes, you will need a full-height spacer to place the AimPoint or TriPower at the proper height when mounting directly on a flattop.
There are two full-height spacers available. The standard one is rectangular, and just raises the sight. I recommend the cantilever version, which pushes the optic further forward, closer to the optimal location. If you were to be mounting your optic on an ARMS or GG&G rail, or on the hump of a KAC RAS II, you would omit the spacer, as these rails all add the .460" height. -Troy |

Thanks for your help Troy. I have one more question. Why do people use cantiliver mounts, it seems to put the optic too far away to me. I am interested to know the reason why you would want that.

Some folks insist on having the optic farther out over the forend for a better field of view. Having a cantilever mount or spacer will do this for those who have standard handguards or for those who feel the RAS or other rail forend is not solid enough to retain zero.
Other folks want the optic on the reciever so as not to worry about zero loss. The end of the upper reciever is plenty far and it really all boils down to personal preference. Find what you like and shoot well with and go for it. |

Other reason to put the Aimpoint foward is to make room for the nigh vision ... unless you have googles (I wish).

Dot sights are NOT like conventional optics. You don't close one eye, and you don't want it mounted to the rear, close to your eye, because you don't want your field of view limited by your view through the optic. These devices are designed to be mounted forward, and used with both eyes open, so that you see the dot as part of your entire view. This allows you to be VERY fast getting on target, and prevents you from losing situational awareness.
If you've only used magnified optics, this can take some getting used to. But mounting your optic to the rear will force you to "tunnel" by making you focus only on what you see through the tube/screen, and it will take longer to find additional targets, and you'll have trouble keeping track of what else is happening around you. Some folks *do* have eyesight or other issues that require less-than-optimal setups, and you can tell by many pics of our military using them that they are both limited by their mounts, and in most cases, don't understand the benefits of forward-mounting either. And with M4s that are using a top-mounted PAQ-4 or PEQ-2, you can only have your optic so far forward before you'd run into your laser. -Troy |

That is some good info Troy, thanks. Hey one other question, If I had an A2 upper with a free float RAS mounted on it, would an Aimpoint or Tripower be too far away mounted on the handguard forward of the carry handle?

No, it would be ideal having the optic mounted over the rear portion of the handguards (forward enough that you can still open the lens cap). You'd want the straight spacer for that instead of the cantilever spacer.
