tried that but it just seems to change the amount of illumination.

okay, it's what I said.
If you look closely at the illumination knob, you will see TWO sets of knurls. The outer one is about the thickness of a quarter. You need to grab the inner set ( or the knob) and keep it from rotating. Grab the outer, and turn counterclockwise to remove the cover. It's a flat battery inside that turret |
