After seeing SCTX's post I started thinking.  Dangerous, I know.  But, given the ballistics of the 5.56 3-400yds, would a scope with mildots even be applicable?

For ranges beyond 400, yes.
For measuring range, yes.

Mildots will range at unknown distances, which is the ENTIRE point of having it.

5.56x45 has a combat effective range of 600m + right?

600m > 300 or 400 yards.

Depending upon the role - for a Spoter/Obervers rifle sure - for a DM/SAM maybe

The 5.56mm can reach out to ranges most dont realize with a SPR/SAM a 700m+ hit is not unthinkable.
