Does anyone out there have experience with a Leupold 3-9X40 Tactical scope?

No, I don't have a scope for my AR (20")yet, I am investigating. With scope, mounts, etc., I want to stay under $500, otherwise I would bite the bullet and buy a Trijicon. From my past experience (military) I think you need some sort of magnification for 100 yds and out. If you can't hit something at 50 yds and under-give the gun away.

OK but has anyone actually tried one of these Leupolds?
While the Aimpoint and the Eo Tech and the ACOG and the Elcan all have great features,I am also interested in this low cost alternative to the Vari X III line.
I already have an ACOG and it is the bomb. But I'm putting together another rifle and I would like to put either the 3x9 Tactical (VXII) or the 3.5x10 Tactical.(Vari X III) I have had great luck with all the Leupolds I have ever owned but the VX II sounds a little to good to be true.
But I digress, has anyone tried one?

They are good scopes.  I have a VXIII 3.5-10 on a Steyr SSG .308.  It is great.  I have also used VXII 3-9 scopes on other rifles.  I just put one on my son in laws hunting 30-06.  They are a bargain for what they cost.  Can you buy a better scope?  Yes, but for more money.  Is it what you should put on an AR?  I don't know, depends on what you want to do with it.  What more would you like to know?  Watch-Six

Just a few weeks ago I bought a Leupold 6-18x40 VxII at www.natchezss.com It was 399 but you got a 30 dollar gift certificate when you purchased it which I used for ammo. So I really only paid 369 for the scope. Which I didnt think was a bad deal. And it is under you 500 budget. I mounted it on my Varminter and its a great combo.

Quoted:

If you do go with a conventional scope, I recommend the Armalite one-piece mount.  IMO, it's the best mount for installing a conventional scope on an AR.

I'll second that.
