As a disclaimer I used the search first but came up with nothing.

Correct, it is to prevent daytime glint of the lense which can be seen for miles.I do not know if it has the secondary ability to prevent NV from seeing the dot.

I have one for my ML2 but do not use it.  Its good for hunting.  It breaks up the "red" color of the ML2.  Basically kills the flash of the red...    if you want one I will sell you mine.

I have these on all my scopes. They are a great investment. I wish I could get a pair for my Leica binos !!!

I have the Tenebraex ARD (Anti-Reflection Device) installed on my Leupold 3.5-10X40 LR M3. You can really see the difference. A nice little investment IMO... Better for a SWS but can be used if you have the need, or just for looks [:D]

Does it in any way hinder or limit the quality of sight in looking through the sight.  I guess what I mean to say, does it make the sight picture dark or shady in anyway?

It will dampen the amount of incoming light, effecting picture brightness to certain degree. It's more of an issue in reduced-light conditions.
