This is actually a generic reticle question, but I'm using the ELCAN as an example.  What is the purpose of the bold "picket" portion of the reticle?  Wouldn't the lighted triangle be enough?  Here's what I'm talking about:

Try as I might, I can never see the lit stadia lines at night regardless of how dark it is, just the lit triangle.  I believe the stadia lines are for range estimation.
