 Arriving April 20th The SS line of scopes was discontinued by tasco several years back. We had previously worked out a deal with tasco to bring them back for a limited time at a special price (way below wholesale). Well that limited time expired and Tasco was purchased by Bushnell, causing us to renegotiate the deal with Bushnell. This has caused our inventory to be depleted and have a down time. Everything is finalized and we are expecting delivery of all four models in three to four months. We are now accepting back orders and will ship on a first come first serve basis. Now is the time to get one of the most popular tactical scopes made at a fraction of the cost that they should be selling for. These scopes sold in excess of $800.00 before tasco discontinued them. I gotta question for you, CF. I'm looking for a good quality scope. I don't have the money at the moment to buy 2-3 different scopes for different applications, so I want to make one purchase and make it count.
I'm building at tactical-type rifle and want a good optic for it. The TASCO SS seems like a great choice (quality at a good price). But what does one LOSE in going with a FIXED power scope? I'm also considering the VX II tactical (kinda comparing apple and oranges here?) and the VXIII tactical (i know, i know THIS one is a lot more!), which are VARIABLE power scopes. So, my question is this: If I want the best all around scope for a precision rifle, is it best to go with a variable power scope? How close is too close for a 10x scope? Will trying to use scopes for targets 100 yds or less be an impossible task? Thanks. |

The SS line of scopes would be a good choice. A fixed power scope will not allow you to zoom in closer or zoom out for a wider field of view. A fixed power scope has less lenses and the ones that it does have are all fixed. This makes it more durable and brighter. You can easily use a 10x scope as close as 25 yards. There are benefits to having a variable powered scope and the only way I would choose one over a fixed 10x is if it was a 6-20. I see no benefit in using a 3-9x over a fixed 10x for precision target shooting. |

But isn't easier to "lose" your target when you have a target that is kinda closer (i.e. 100-150) with a 10X scope, because of the smaller field of view? Since I have ZERO experience with optics, I'm just trying to figure out the potential limitations of a fixed pwer scope, especially a 10X. My concern, I guess, is how big the FOV is for a 10X scope at ranges from 100 -250 yds. I guess the military snipers must be taking really LONG shots since they seem to specify 10X scopes, right? Thanks for any info. |

A fixed 10x does have a more narrow field of view than a lower power. For target shooting this is fine, but could present problems for hunting applications or quick shots.

I would like to have an opinion from SWFA and others on how the Bushnell Elite 4200 series mildot scope stacks up against the Tasco Super Sniper and the Leupold tactical models? The 4200 is under $400.00. I don't expect it to beat out the top of the line Leupolds at that price point, but would like to know what the trade offs are at that price point, because $400.00 is about what I can afford to put a scope on my 20" heavy barrel, flat top, varmit AR.

The Elite 4200 Mil-Dot is a 6-24x40 with a 12x Mil-Dot that can be used on 12x or 24x. The 4200 series is a more robust scope when compared to the 3200. The 6-24 comes standard with low profile target knobs and a sun-shade. This scope is more of a varmint scope or long range target.
Leupold makes many variations of tactical scopes that would be nice on your set up. The two most popular would be the cammed M3 versions that make bullet drop a piece of cake and the Long Range 4.5-14x50 with a 30mm tube, side focus and target knobs. These scopes were designed and built to see abuse and tactical use. Excellent choice. The SS series are all fixed power scopes and built like tanks. If you plan to really use and abuse your set up this is the way to go. Oversized target knobs and side focus (on the M model) make this scope very user friendly. It seems that the Super Sniper is of way better quality than the lower end Tascos. How does clarity and brightness compare with the Leupold VX-II and Vari X-III Tactical? I have a Tasco Mag IV which cannot compare to the Leupold. But I guess the Leupold costs more also.

The SS glass in no doubt better than a VariX-II, VX-II or VX-I. It is compairable to the VariX-III as far as clarity and brightness. The SS is many times better than your Mag IV. SWFA |

Only thing that the lower Leupold price points have on the Tasco SS line, is the lifetime transferable warranty. Otherwise, the Tasco is pretty close to Vari-X III and Weaver Grand Slam brightness and clarity. Wish I still had access to the college physics labs and stuff so I could measure the light transmission and such of a bunch of scopes.

I've probably missed it but what is the benefit of side focus vs. rear focus? For target shooting at 100-200 yds, would 20x be too much? It seems as long as FOV is not critical, the higher power would be preferable.

The 20x would be ok for 100-200 yard shooting if that is all you used it for. It would be difficult to use the 20x with out sand bags and a bench. It would not be my first choice for an all around scope, but for target only it works great. SWFA |

I would suggest the 10x SS. Great power range to do just about anything. The 16x and 20x will be too difficult to use without a benchrest.
