I authored the 'To Load 30 rd mags to capacity...or NOT...' Thread, and since it went 7 pages deep with varying opinions, I didn't want to just add a poll. So here's a new thread.

With any magazine for any firearm, if the round stack cannot depress enough to accomodate the bolt/bolt carrier of the firearm, then it's overfull and needs a round (or even two) removed for reliable function.

I have had issues at 30. Don't know if it was a coincidence or not. Same guns....zero incidents minus a round or two.

In that case, 30 is good for my mags...a simple insert/pull works fine no resistance.

30 rounds in 30 round mags. If you want two less rounds in your mags, that's your problem. Mine seat just fine, fully loaded, on a closed bolt.

+1,.....mine seat fine in all my weapons. Pmags and D&H teflons.....YMMV

30 rounds in a 30 round mag. I've never had an AR-15 + mag combo that would not allow
a 30 round mag to seat on a closed bolt.

The answer is to test your magazines, and load accordingly.

30 rds seems to work fine. The only time I had mag issues was with a steel 20 rd Pro Mag. Got rid of the mag, got rid of the problem.

30 rounds for a 30 round magazine.

If your gun is in spec and your mags are in spec then there should be no problem.

I guess that's why the military only makes 9 round stripper clips.

Come on.

If you think you will overload your magazine loading from loose rounds... then yea only put in 28. That 31st round will stop you in your tracks. Better to down load then overload.

If you're using stipper clips...then use three of them.

Sometimes it is these same people with a long and rich experience in firearms that "remember" all too well the issues of the past... and are dead set against repeating them.

I had the same sort of issue with a SMG that I had 'foolishly' been loading magazines to capacity for almost two years with no problems - UNTIL I went to a high speed training course where the instructor mentioned in an off handed way it is just 'common knowledge' that everyone loads to capacity MINUS TWO!! What a surprise!

(Don't tell... but I didn't change!)

I'm not familiar with a current SMG where that practice was needed or recommended. Are you sure that the instructor was indicating ALL magazine-fed firearms, or just AR/M16 platforms and magazines? Which instructor/course was it?

There is a difference. I never have been taught nor seen recommendations for 30-rd SMG mags, and not experienced the same issue with MP5 mags as I have with AR/M16 ones. You will experience it if you overload the MP5 mags however.
