Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - Were M16 20 round mag originally black?

I picked up two 20 round mags at a small show today.  The stamping on the bottom plate says:  M16/M16A1 CAL 5.56mm
        Universal Inds. Div.
        Simmons Prec Prod Inc
        West Haven, Conn. U.S.A


I seem to remember from somewhere that the original mags were black.  Is this true?  If so, they still work great.

Nope, all the early 20s I've seen are gray.  The waffle mags look darker, but none of them really look black to me.  The only 20 I've held (or own) is just like yours.  It works great!
