New to the AR. Showing my ignorance what are those devices at the bottom of some mags? They appear to be hooks of some sort... Your response is appreciated.

But what is their purpose? Are they to pull the mag out? Hang the mag up?

Its supposed to make it easier to pull a magazine out of a mag pouch.  It also keeps the mags from rattling in the pouch.

I haven't been able to bring myself to drop $3 each for them yet.  

The "original" idea was to use paracord and duct tape to make loops at the bottom of the mags.

They also help to cushion the magazine when they are dropped onto a hard surface.

Magpuls work as advertised,I have a couple, but I don't think they are worth the $$$
