ammo in your magazines before the springs loses its memory? I am asking this because I would like to keep a FULLY LOADED magazine within reach.

the way I understand it is that storing the mag will not harm it. actually working the spring (load, unload) wears the spring out.

Never fully load a 30 round magazine... A fully loaded 30 round magazine can make it difficult for the bolt/carrier to strip off the first round during a reload, especially with a rifle that has just been fired a lot... My personal rule is to leave one round out for every ten loaded...

Good opportunity to ask this. My sks mag holds 37 rounds fully loaded even though its rated at 30. 34 are as easy to put in and they just start to get a little hard and then the 38th is not happening, even though the 37th goes in easier than the 10th on my 15 round SnW mags. Whats the most I should put in it. |

That reminds me of the 10 round AK mags I used awhile back that actually hold 17.

Hmmm, the smart ass answer would be, well....30. That said, why are you able to load 20% more rounds than the max capacity of the mag? Tag this one as I'm curious.

When I'm shooting at the range and conserned with accuracy I only put in 5 maybe 10 bullets at a time. I do that because I'll shoot a group of 5 and then move to a different target.
If I'm out plinking I'll put in 25-28 but never 30. |

I found it out by loading it while watching tv. I dumped two 20 round boxes of wolf out and started loading not paying attention. When I finished it, I had 3 rounds left on the floor. Wierd.

I will put 28 rounds in a 30. Loading a full mag (28rds) with one still in the chamber is more dependably done, IMHO, with 28 max.

Earlier this year I found a fully loaded 20 round Colt mag in one of the five gallon buckets I use for storage of once-fired 223 brass. I have no clue how that mag ended up there-I must have put it there and then forgotten to remove it before I filled the bucket with brass.
My point is that I haven't opened the lid of that bucket since 1991  Despite this the mag worked just fine, and the ammo all went boom too  |

I remember someone posting a while back they found a mag from the late 70s or early 80s that was loaded. All fired just fine. |

Before I started nosing around this forum, I didn't know about this issue (or non-issue ) with magazine springs.
I have a 14-round S&W 5906 magazine I kept fully loaded with defensive rounds for about 8 years. I replaced the ammo with fresh rounds every few years, but otherwise the mag stayed fully charged and was never used. I just took the magazine out and fired about 50 rounds through it and it worked just fine. |

Nope. But that's very good. I do live in Hawaii and the S&W 5906 is HPD's duty weapon but I'm not HPD |

I load all my mags to 30 and I've never had an issue, even with a filthy rifle.
