whats the bare minimum of mags should one have and should they be all 30 or 20 or some of both.
It really depends on you and what you use your rifle for. I personally think the more the merrier and I prefer the 30rd mags although I do have a few 20rd.
get some of both (all USGI of course)
I have only one AR now and I have 10x 30rounds mags and 5x 20rounds mags. I don't need more. Maybe when I'll buy my 2nd AR I will buy more |
I think this is about right. |

88 is Better!!! Tack |

89 is a little better than that |

HAH! I have one of those drums too, and I love it! 120 rounds on the weapon-- serious zombie medecine. I can't understand why no one has tooled up to make them again in the post-ban world.
I haven't even tried to count all of mine, but the .Mil considers a basic load to be seven mags: two pouches of three and one for the weapon. But since we're not limited by TRADOC, get as many as you can. Don't forget to fire-test them all and weed out the ones that don't work reliably. (I just salvage the components and then ball-peen the feed lips of the bad ones.) |
When everyone who knows you have BRD starts making fun of you for being obsessed with mags you need about 100 above that- then yer all set!

I have almost 150, ALL USGI, some 20s, some 30s. I stocked up because one day the leftist hatemongers will be back in power, and one of the first things they're gonna do is come back for all your magazines. Then they're gonna try to take your guns, again.
Stock up NOW! |
If you have to ask (or if you can still count how many you actually have), then its not enough
I can report that 325 (or so) is not "enough". Maybe it's 350? 400? Only one way to find out.

The 20s are great for the range, as the 30s (especially if you have installed Ranger plates) can get in the way if you are shooting prone or off the bench. I personally hate to load ammo in mags at the range. So, I like to have enough not to have to reload ammo there. The number of mags would would need depends on how much you shoot at a time. I usually shoot 150-200 rounds per visit, so 10-12 of the 20 rounders is what you need. I would say you need at least 10 of the 30s and 10 of the 20s. Mags seem to be really cheap right now, so this is a good time to load up at gunshows or at www.dsgarms.com. DSG has the teflon coated mags, which I really like. Bushmaster also sells these. You should also replace the green or black followers with the magpul self-leveling followers. The Magpul ranger plates are a nice touch as well, but add about an inch to the length of the mag. |
I prefer 30 rounders and my rule of thumb is 10 for EVERY longarm MINIMUM but more is better
10 good dependable ones per rifle.
Danny ETA: 30's for fun and zombies and 20's for the bench and that "old school cool look". |
That would be a pain in the ass to load one after the other, one bullet at a time. |
No less than at least half of what your rifles are worth.
$1000 in rifles <--- you need $5000 in mags. |
Get yourself 20-30 mags and a few extra springs and followers. And spend the rest of your money on ammo. It doesn't matter if you have 200 mags, if you don't have any ammo to put in them, they are worthless.
Hypothetical SHTF scenario, unless your held up in your house shooting bad guys from your bedroom window, your only going to be able to carry 10 or so mags. Unless you want to move at a snails pace. When I go to the range I take ten mags with me. My opinion, it's better to have to much ammo than to have to many mags. |

Bare minimum? 1. Otherwise you'll have a real PITA single shot.
I have somewhere around 25 30 rounders and about 5-10 20 rounders, with the 2 10 rounders that came with 2 of my rifles. I think that's enough for me. I'm sure I'll buy more though.
I thought I had about 80 mags (all 30s) but we are moving to a new house and I "found" a few I forgot about. Now its up to 106. Fun Show is in late June so I'm sure I will have more. I never leave a Fun Show empty handed.
I agree - that's what LULAs are for. |

I've settled on 50 dependable ones per rifle. |
Never can have tooooo many.
I have about 50 GI AR-15 mags ,20s and 30s. Of course I also have about 100-120 mags for guns that I don't own YET: Fal, CETME, M1A, and 50+ HK91 mags. FB |
I got about 45 20 and 30 rd mags, 1 beta C mag, and a MWG 90 rounder. If another ban comes I'll kick my self for not buying 50 or 100 more mags. So I'll probably buy another 50-100 mags over the next year or so
Yes. As long as it is an integer, you are fine. |
But soon you'll have some spare green followers, extra springs and maybe some floorplates too -- then there goes the integer stratedgy. |

always "just one more" |
