Do you have 5.56mm belt fed upper? The M249 box mag is a belt.

The plastic 200-round SAW box is simply a holder for the belted ammo. It doesn't actually feed the ammo into anything.

A 200-250 round mag would be cool. Twice as much as a BETA!! And everyone whines about the BETA with it's measly 100 rd capacity.

Years ago the Marine Corps tested a SAW specific magazine, it was made of some type of polymer and had a much higher strength spring, cured many of the feed problems with the SAW and magazines, but was less than reliable with the M16, so it was abandoned, rightfully so. When I was a student at TBS, the instructors there showed us a couple. They were all black plastic with a waffle pattern on them.

FWIW, reports from abroad indicate that the 200 round belt in the can rattles badly and tends to wrap itself up, and the 100 round belt is preffered. I am not a gunner, I have not fired a SAW, I only read this on one DoD document, so its not the gospel, but its interesting nonetheless. STLRN, do you know any more?

The 200 pack is unwieldy and rattles. The rattling it is even worse in training because of blanks the solution is taking the ammo out and putting moleskin in the drum. The clip that holds the pack on weapon also sometime breaks.
When you can get them the 100 round fabric assault packs are the way to go for carrying your ready rounds. |

The biggest problem with the SAW 200 Ready box is the attachment point. when a gunner goes to prone and hits the box,it pops off dumping your belt all over the ground, and Like STLRN said. it's noisy as shit. The option to run M16 mags in the SAW was only an Emergency option designed into the weapon and the TM states to only run with M16 mags only in a Combat Emergency. If was kinda a stupid idea anyhow. think of the logic. if your out of Belted 5.56mm what's the point of turning the SAW into a big M16 or M4. If your in a situation like that there are gonna be spare M16/M4's around to be had. The 100 rd cloth Bag (or AKA the 100 rd Nut sack) is a great invention and works slick.

Depending on how you pack your "nut sack" you can get in about 120-125 rounds but you just have to be sure that you won't let it bind up. Also we had experimental "higher capacity nut sacks" that were a big no no to lose as they were being tested. When out and about every saw gunner uses their nut sack while en route to the obj. for noise disapline and then can switch to a 200 rd plastic drum when things start to get going. And yes, I was a saw gunner 1st RGR Bat. in what seems like eons ago but really only four years ago. HORSE

I have found that MRE meal boxes help deaden the noise of rounds moving in the box. As far as the attachment, sometimes you can run the srtaight pin part of the safety pin you get with M-16 Bandoleers under the release tab to keep it from releasing as easily,
