How do you tell a post-ban magazine from a pre-ban magazines ?

I recently purchased two (2) .223 30 round magazines at a gun show.

They are both made of aluminum (have dull gray finish) and have Adventure Line, Inc. on the face plates & both have the green plastic followers.

But one of them has a 5 digit number followed by what I take to be a date stamp (6-91) on the side, while the other one has no numeric markings of any kind that I can see. Why would one of these magazines have numbers on it while the other does NOT ?

Other than a date stamp or "Restricted..." warning stamped onto them, there is no physical difference between a pre-ban and a post-ban mag. The difference is LEGAL. Mags manufactured after 9/13/94 are illegal for normal persons to possess, under the federal "assault weapons" laws (which will be expiring in a week).

Regarding the magazine portion of the law, the burden of proof that a mag is restricted is on the government. Note that this is very different from the firearm portion. If your mag has a date of 09/94 or earlier, or has no markings (most "preban" mags were not marked), then it is legal to possess (i.e., "preban"). If the mag has a date stamping of 10/94 or later, or has a "Restricted to LEO/Gov't/Military/Export Use Only" marking, then it is illegal to possess unless you are one of those persons (i.e., "postban").

Your mags are legal.

We spoke with LaBelle today.

the new "no-ban" mags will be stamped with their CAGE Code and the month/year of manufactuer.

FYI (to others, I know you know this, Bravo!):

This has been a military requirement since the late 80's, so it should be no surprise to anyone. The military needs this information to help them track down bad lots of mags, and is largely a result of the Cooper Industries debacle.

I posted this correction on other threads, but "LaBelle" made the original tooling that has been bought out a couple times. I still call them "LaBelle" mags (old habit), but they are currently made by DH. Located here in WI - a couple blocks from our place.
