Ok, with the inpending flood gates opening.

How many mags do I need for every day use (range) & how many do I need to stock pile away?

I have a bunch of old 20 rounders, but not that many 30's.

What is your take?

Well, if you're using Orlites you're gonna need a truckload.

But seriously, I used to figure a certain number per gun.  How many?  Who knows, but if you pick a number between 10 and 30 you'll be in good, if arbitrary, company.

Nowadays I look at mags in the context of likelihood of another ban (yeah, I believe this one will expire).  My crapometer says we'll have another hi-cap mag ban all too soon.  So when prices settle down I'll be buying more.

I use a total of 6 mags (3 -20's and 3-30's) for range use only. I have another 3 NIW ones and a few dozen others that I will keep for future use if they stop the practice of having replacement mags.
I prefer the 20's for the range, especially when shooting prone. If they start to make the ban permanent Im "selling the farm" to buy as many 20's and 30's as I can.

My normal load out is 14-20 mags.  I have at least that many loaded at all times for training value if nothing else.  I probably have about 35-40 mags total for use, plus another 10 or so 20 rounders and 4 30 rounders that are part of my Vietnam era collection of stuff.

Stuck with the Pataki Ban here in NY State, so I've jumped on as many pre-ban mags I can afford.  They have to last me as long as I live here.  I have:

10 SA80 mags (4 in use, 6 stored)
30 USGI Labelle Teflon mags (4 in use, 26 stored)

These mags are used both in my Bushy 16" carbine and my SU16, plus I'm considering jumping on a 20" A3 Bushy for the "arsenal".  I may pick up another 10 Labelle Teflons - these mags are awesome.  The steel SA80 take up the bulk of the cycles at the range, my thought is they will stand up to more use and abuse than the aluminum USGI mags.

My fear is that after the Clinton Ban expires, the ban in NY State on regular capacity (20 to 30rds) magazines will be virtually impossible to enforce and in a knee-jerk reaction the state's politicians will eventually ban the sale and shipping of all regular capacity mags to NYS or they will require "proof" that one has owned such mags prior to any future ban on the possession and purchase of such mags.  The very worst scenario would see NYS mag whores like myself totally banned from the possession of such magazines for their EBRs.

In the meantime I have stocked up on ~20 metric mags for my FAL; 5 E. German 30rd steel mags, 5 20rd "Tanker" mags, 5 30rd Polish polymer mags, 10 Bulgarian 30rd steel mags, 15 Bulgarian 30rd polymer "waffle" mags for my SA M7(S), PLUS I have 15 "Type 57" magazines for a rifle I don't even own or have near term plans to purchase - M1A/M14 - I figure it at least gives me options in case I want to go with an M1A or even an Armalite AR10 in the future.

I figure better to buy mags (and EBRs) now while they are relatively inexpensive and available, rather than wait until NYS's ban is made even more draconian, or a new national AWB is passed upon a change of majority in the House of Representatives.

If you have a range buddy all you really NEED is two.
they could load one as fast as you would what to shoot (most of the time)
But 5-6 would be good

15 GI Labelle  30s and 16 GI Colt 20s, probably pick up another 15 to 20 Labelle 30s if/when there is a price drop.

I usually have 15 30s for each AR (1 in gun, 6 for LBV, 4 for a bandoX2). I try to keep a like "back" for each AR as spares. So 30 per AR is optimum for me.

All I have are 30-rounders.

10 crappy unmarked mags which sometimes work and sometimes don't (got 'em dirt cheap).
3 thermolds which work great.
3 original colt mags, 2 of which work flawlessly.

So 16 total, only 5 of which I'd depend on.

5 USGI 30s loaded, 5 USGI 30s still in the wrap, and 10 Brit. steels loaded. Only one rifle so far. I need a job just to fund ARs and accessories alone.

Run out of ammo when? I have plenty of ammo, and all the dead guys around me will provide plenty.

The million dollar question..........

That and how many licks.....

I have mags stashed in places I forgot about. If you are talking plinking, a dozen or so is fine. If you have foil, use it. TEOWAKI/SHTF you have to assume a non resupply. Now how many will you need to last you forever?

Two AR'S....... 30 refinshed  30rd mags,  16 refinshed 20 rd mags and just got 14 30 rd mags for $40.00. Will refinsh next week.    refinsh = new springs, green follower and re-spray outside finsh.
Most mags cost $10- 12.50   All USGI.     Also have 3 40 rd USA mags ( work like clockwork ).
Leave 30 rd USA mags alone, unless you need targets. LOL

I have 16 30 USGI mags, I try and use them all, I rotate the one I take to the range so I know that they all feed 100%. I don't like the idead of keeping some in the wrapper for use at a critical time. Just because it's in the wrapper does not mean it will workk 100%.

It could have been made out of spec or damaged in shipping, you don't know if you don't feed ammo through them.

My take is, as many as you can possibly afford, and keep them all loaded.  An empty magazine is as useless(not worthless....USEless)  as teets on a bull. So is an unloaded gun, unless you want to use it for a club, or clean it.
