After reading the "Clear Mag" thread, I thought this in itself would make an interesting discussion topic.

If you had $60 to spend on AR15 magazines for range(bench & prone) and personal/home defense use, how would you spend it?

(I did increase the amount $60 from the orginal $50, because most people have some budget "leeway", while I needed to name an absolute number that we can't go over.)

To make this more interesting I'm going to add an additional condition that the magazines you would "buy" with your $60 are the only AR15 magazine you're allowed to have for your AR15.

2x 30rnd. LaBelle Grey Teflon
1x 10rnd. Bushmaster

The 10 rounder would be used for prone work at the range, and the 30 rounders would be dual role as range and defense mags.  I figure if you need more than 2 mags/60 rnds for a defensive situation, you've crossed over into SHTF terriroty.  All three are high quality mags and would last through a lot of use, especially wear on the finish.

For $60, I'd buy 4 SA-80 mags. They work and steel lasts.

Id get 4 USGI and 1 Thermold ending up at $55

2 - GI 20s
2 - GI 30s (NIW Colt or Okay marked)

Aluminum mags only - stronger and more durable than steel.

Hey everyone. I've been lurking here for about a year now trying to absorb all the great knowledge. I finally went out and got my first AR last week and I'm loving it! This thread is perfect because I'm looking to spend $50-$60 for a few mags. I was just wondering where you make your purchases from so I can get some within the next week or so. Once again, thanks for the great site and I hope to learn much.  

I highly recommend the "Equipment Exchange" as THE place to shop for 'mags.  I have yet to see prices lower or quality better any place else.

For 60 bucks I would pickup five 30 rounders from my favorite mag stop. As soon as the ban expires, I hope to pick up those nice Colt marked mags with green followers I always toss back in the bins.

In fact, I just picked up a half dozen 30 rounders, OK, Center, Adventureline and one 20 round Colt last week. Refinished them all.

I've never paid more than $10 for a USGI 30 round magazine.  I would go to the same store and buy 6 USGI mags, and hope I didn't have to pay tax!

Save your money and buy what you need
Range Mags should not be any different than any other Mag, you should keep them clean, functioning and in top performance. It is bullshit to need different Mags for shooting. 10rd Mag would be good for the bench rest.

BS. Steel is alot stronger than aluminum. I'd pick up 4- SA mags.

I agree, but I would definetly avoid the BM 10's.

I just got my hands on two Bushmaster 10rnders.  What's the scoop on them?  Did I just saddle myself down with more useless junk?

Bushmaster 10 rounder mags can be dangerous.  Send them to me for disposal!

Ok I'm game. I would buy 5 GI 30s from the EE and then trade some mounts I already have for some super sweet mags and a shit load of ammo so I would be ready for anything.

Not quite that simple.
In the case of an aluminum 30 rd GI mag vs SA-80 mags, even the H&Ks....alumininum IS stronger than steel..

it honestly depends on what you want.

the same piece of material in the same dimension.
then yes. Aluminum is stronger than steel.

but aluminum does not have the tensility of steel...

sooo its what you want. something light an strong but capable of breaking instead of bending

or

something a little heavier just about as strong but will bend before it cracks or breaks.

its individual concern really.


id take some of the SA80s. i have plenty of USGI's

I'd buy 4 Bushmaster Teflon LEO 30 rounders at my local LE distibutor for $14.95 each, but I wait until September 15th, when I am going there and cleaning them out.
