I have recently discovered the concept of magazine replacement bodies. I am sure you guys have heard of CMMG and their mag replacement bodies, but I see very little traffic on AR15.com about these units. I am sceptical of anything that is not well documented on AR15.com ;-) so I am here to ask the following:
1) Is this legal if the old body is retained.
2) Do you need to DEMIL the old body
3) Is the CMMG body any good
4) Who besides CMMG makes replacement bodies.

Thanks in advance,

Ray

I'm not a lawyer, taking advice from strangers on the internet is unwise, yadda, yadda, yadda...

1) It is legal. Theoretically the old body does not need to be retained. As a practical matter, the old body would be used to prove "prebanness" if it ever came to that.

2) The rule is that you cannot have enough components to create another mag. If you don't have components, you don't have to demil. However, demilling is easy and safe.

3 & 4) Don't know.

Personal opinion, with the prices on NIW pre-bans what they are today, it isn't worth the hassle to replace bodies.

1)  YES!  It is legal to replace all parts of a mag, just not all parts at the same time.  Also don't have enough spare parts laying around to make another mag.

2) NO, but it couldn't hurt.

3)YES,  Read this pos. There are a few ppl that say they are great. http://ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=24&t=171982&page=1

4)  CMMG does not make these, they just sell them.  Nobody else is selling these at this time that I know about. Also, it look like he is sold out at this time, but is getting a few more in.
