I usually tape 2 layers of military 90MPH tape around the bottom half of my USGI 30 rounders.
(neat trick I learned from our fighting troops) Why? 1.) makes pulling mags out of ammo pouches alot easier. 2.)makes extraction and slapping a fresh mag in the well easier. 3.) Gives the mags a nice sure-grip textured surface where your hand comes in contact with the mag the most. 4.)Sound Discipline. Eliminates all that noisy rattle when carried in ammo pouches. 5.)second layer present for extra texture as well as having tape on hand readily available to fix or secure anything you may have to fix or secure. 6.)It looks kinda cool!

If you look at pictures of our troops it appears that 9 out of ten seem to tape their mags as well for some of the above reasons. Improvisation Israeli-style! As for what's in, get the Olive Drab tape, It's classic firearms fashion that never goes out of style![:D] |

A couple of downsides:
1) Makes the rifle taller with the extra protrusion when trying to shoot from a low prone position. 2) It invites dirt and crud into the second magazine, especially if spending time in the sand or mud. Glenn |

he's not talking about taping two mags together, but rather, just running a band of tape, 2 layers thick, around the bottom of each mag.

Who'd tape two together? Bang a feed lip on something and yer screwed. Tape around the bottom is a good idea and who cares if it's sticky when you remove it. CLP will break down the adhesive.

When comes time to remove the 90MPH tape, all it takes is a little bit of sticking resticking in a velcro like manner to remove the excess adhesive. You can tape 2 mags side-by-side with some ammo crate foam between them to be able to have one in the well and one beside it. You can also put a loop of 550 cord about 2" long on the bottom of the mags when you're taping them. Helps when pulling mags out of the pouch.

I wouldnt do it myself because of all the crude,Sand,etc!I would like them to drain also!

Sound discipline and having a supply of tape handy are the two most reasonable reasons I can see for using it.
I have never been much of a fumbler when it comes to handling magazines from a pouch or during a magazine change, even after putting myself under the stresses of action rifle shooting. Sure, it's possible to fumble a magazine but I don't think it's any less likely for me if I were to tape my magazines. I have however gotten sick of the rediculous amount of "magazine slap" that you can get when walking around with 3 magazines in a GI pouch. Some of my magazines are taped and others have bits of bicycle inner tube stretched around the bottoms, both work well for helping eliminate that magazine slapping sound. Having both tape and a supply of rubber bands(thanks to bicycle innertube) can be a handy thing. |

Uglygun, that is an excellent Idea about the inner tube. I use it as a grip on my USP and never thought of it to reduce noise on my mags. I will have to try that out..

IF I wanted to go that way then MagPull would be about the Best Product out there to use! I bought a Black Mag pouch that holds 8 30rd Mags it also has a Shoulder strap ! It is another good way in carrying mags Without makeing Noise and the Material is some Heavy Duty stuff and the cost is under 15.00 when I last got them!

Yeah, I've heard alot of good reviews on Magpuls
But I guess I'm just a cheap bastage![:D] It's only $7.00 for a roll of Mil-spec 90MPH tape(that'll last a couple years) add a little loop of 550cord and Waa-laa! |

Magpull's are expensive. I don't mind anybody making any money but I'm pretty sure those things cost about a nickle each to manufacture, at the outside ten cents each.
I like the 100 mph tape and para cord idea, although honestly all my magazines are bare. [shock][:I] |

Yes, I have tape around the bottom of all my mags. But for different reasons.
I use just a small piece of regular old masking tape. Then I color the tape either black, blue or red with magic markers. Black indicates the mag was purchase NIW, has a green follower (if it's a 30-rounder) and has been function tested. The blue tape goes on the "like new" mags which have new springs and followers. All the blue mags are also considered very reliable. The reb tape indicates a mag is for range use only. Most of these mags are spreading slightly at the lips. They still feed okay, but they don't drop free. I wouldn't trust my life with these mags unless I have no alternative. The tape does help reduce sound in the surplus mag carriers (not an issue with my Blackhawk vest though). But the primary reason I use the tape is for mag identification. Also helps at the range when guys just start throwing stuff in their bags. I can spot one of my mags at the other end of the range. |

When I was active duty I put riggers tape the bottom of all my mags. The reason I did this was for noise discipline. Worked very well. I would also cut the straps out of the inside of my ammo pouches so the tape helped keep the mags snug.
I would also take some 550 cord and make about a 2 inch long loop. I would then slide off the bottom of the magazine housing and push the 550 cord through the hole, knot inside & loop outside. Field expediant mag pulls. Amazing what you can do with riggers tape and 550 cord. |

I have used the tape and cord before, but I prefer the Mag Pulls due to the quiteness and ease of pulling them off to clean or service a Mag.

Tape is often used to identify what TYPE of ammo is in the mag (tracers vs SS109's). At Highpower matches I use a couple wraps of 90mph tape to instantly know which mags are loaded with 8 rounds for the rapid fire events. As mentioned before, it's also handy for an emergency repair of clothing or gear.

I use tape on my mags, in addition to, and sometimes instead of, 550 cord. I also use bicycle inner tube on some of my mags, as well. I find that the tape keeps my mags from slapping together in my USGI pouches. I also have a British web gear set-up, but the mag pouches have internal dividers in them. My son has a Blackhawk vest, and the pouches are a tad small for taped or inner-tubed mags, so his mags are 550-corded only.

I tape my mags, but only to mark them as mine. When out at the range with the gang, mags can easily get confused as to who their daddy is. Mine are color coded with tape so I can spot them in a second.
I also number all of them so I can track issues should they arrise such as FTF etc.. I do the same on my pistol mags. I have been thinking of the innertube thing though... I will have to experiment with that.. |
