so since civilians get to use whatever ammo they damn well please

what would you pack as your "sweet baby jesus the fan is covered in shit" ammo?

Ive been using just standard m193 and 855 since its usually cheap in bulk

but lets pretend that price isnt a factor and lets also pretend that m855a1 is still basically impossible to get.

What 5.56 or .223 load would you use?

I thought about 64gr speer since can stock up on a lot for $.50 a rd at palmetto, but then i was like...but its your go to ammo, why not spend double and go for mk262?

I picked up some Black Hills 77 grain TMK 5.56mm recently, it's my current go to ammo for home defense. But yeah I also have way more common/cheaper 55 and 62 grain stuff for SHTF and I think it'll work fine as well.

M193.

Cheap, effective, works with all twist rates.

In a SHTF scenario rounds that cost 3xM193 won't have the utility of M193.

M193 is all I use.

To be fair, if it's happening, pretty much any flavor of 5.56 or .223 is going to kill a person at average gunfight distances. I honestly believe that we over think the issue of the best ammo.

Nothing around here is past 100 yds. (trees, you know) so all I load up is 55 grain FMJ.  I've thought about 55 grain soft points, but never bought any.

There's a reason for those 30 round magazines.

In a true SHTF scenario getting shot will be result in a very short lifespan for the majority of folks.  Either blood loss (quick) or infection (slow).

The ones that survive will have learned the value of avoiding confrontations and/or the use of cover and concealment.

I've bought some Hornady and Nosler heavy match bullets to try but at 100 yds. the extra (anything extra, accuracy, energy) isn't going to help much, in my opinion.

Its the most common and mass produced ammo. And works just fine, theres no reason for any thing else in a shtf scenario.

My entire ammo pile comes into play.  Most distances around here aren't going to be very far so the terminal performance of even 55grn ammo should be good to go.  My pile is currently mostly steel cased 55gr FMJ and 62gr SP.

My HD Tavor mag has 16 rds of 77gr TMK followed by 12 rds of RA556B. I figure if 16 rds of 77gr TMK wasn't enough, I'd need something barrier blind.

If money was no object,  I'd just load up on those, but M193 is way cheaper to stock up on.

I have 4 uppers with different optics, all used one one M-16 lower. 2 are 14.5 and 2 are 16 inch. All are FN Mountain series Mid weight. All soot 1/2 inch groups with Military M855 ammunition 160 yards. The  14.5 inch barrels spread to one inch at three hundred yards. The 16 inch start having problems out past 600 yards due to wind and heat. The 14.5's do almost as well but don't have the same optics. All my ammunition is military. That is what you will find to be available in a worst case issue. This is with all .62 gr. Have found the ammo ZQI to be most consistent across the chronograph followed by LC- Federal and PMC being equal, with IMI being the worst of all I have tested. Crimped and sealed primers and bullets will keep you going and I won't be bench rest shooting when and if this ever happens. Also your rifle should shoot (function ) with almost anything, which mine will. That was my goal years ago and I have settled on this set up. Have some QPQ 18 inch setups in 7.62 tat use military out to 900 yard but they don't get run as hard as the 16 does. I have enjoyed all the testing and data storage I have put together.

Did you actually say if money wasn't a factor????  My brain can't comprehend that scenario.  If that's really what you mean then I'd have 68/75/77 of any flavor stacked deep.  Yes, Mk262 being a top pick.  (well I never shot it but since it's military spec it has all the things you want ,( sealant and cannelure at least I think it does)

Otherwise it's M193 and M855 like you do.   That's like 3/4 of my stash.  Which isn't overly large.

I concur. .
I only wish that I could get that degree of performance from my muskets. .
But yeah, M193 will do the job, if I do mine.  .

If it's oh lawd it's happening, it's probaby zombies. So you should probably load zombie max ammo in your mags. The green tips are much better at killing zombies than the red tips so I've heard.

Out of curiosity, how far have you shot M193 out to and have good hits on torso sized targets?  You ever go really far.  Longest I ever shot was 400 and I don't recall having any problems with it at 400.  But I need to try it again.  I was shooting at those plastic type silhouettes and listening for impact.  And looked at the holes too of course.

If money wasn't an issue, then  xm556fbit3 along with some mk262 and mk318.

But since money is a factor, I've stockpiled 64g GD (roughly 1300 rnds) and somewhere north of 5k rounds of xm193. I do have a few boxes of 556fbit, mk262, and mk318.

I've just recently started stocking up on some 110g black tip, and lehigh 115cc and 194g max expansion.

Personally I prefer mk262 type loads for shtf and hunting. I have CBC 77gr stacked deep, as well as some IMI 77gr. To be honest 7-800 yards isn't that far, and in my experiences, 77gr sierras shine brightly over m193 or m855 at those distances as far as accuracy is concerned.  They also perform great in tissue in my experiences hunting. The most important thing imho is having enough ammo for a shtf scenario. That being said I do have several cans of ggg m855 stashed also that I would not hesitate to use either.

Exactly. And it doesn't necessarily matter what optimal ammo we would choose, unless you're an armory...eventually there is a possibility of depletion. In which case basic bitch m193 or .223 would be found almost anywhere in decent quantities. In said zombie or SHTF scenario, at least.

855.  If I am going to be using my AR for anything resembling protecting myself it will be at close range most likely which means a lot to the everywhere or it will be against vehicles and I want penetration uber alles.

I used it in combat.  I am comfortable with it.  It did everything I needed it to do.
