This thread includes our first look at the PolyFrang 45gr frangible ammunition round. It will be updated as our testing begins.
This bullet is a Metal Impregnated Polymer which does not need to be loaded down, is capable of excellent accuracy, can be fired from a suppressor, and has all the benefits of other frangible rounds. This means it is safe against steel at point blank range, is lead free, and virtually eliminates over-penetration.
Product information from the Manufacturer:
PolyFrang .223/5.56mm Frangible Ammunition is for use in training, defense and duty applications. The lead free projectiles are made with Metal Impregnated Polymer (MIP) technology designed to disintegrate upon impact, virtually eliminating ricochets and splashback. PolyFrang maintains lethality while significantly reducing after target collateral damage and over-penetration.
Features and Benefits:
- Lead free projectile is environmentally friendly, reducing cleanup costs
- Reduced ricochet and splashback, allowing for closer engagement within inches of targets
- Reduced damage to steel targets and reduced over-penetration, decreasing range maintenance costs
- Reduced barrel wear and no barrel fouling, reducing armory costs
- Accuracy comparable to standard ammunition out to 200 yards, expanding effective range
- No modifications to duty weapons, saving time and expense
Frangibility
- AR500 steel plate – projectiles disintegrate on impact at any angle
- Ballistic gelatin – projectile disintegration begins at ½" and complete at 7"
- No jacket or plating – no shrapnel created
- Rapid energy transfer – extreme lethality into soft targets
Ballistics
- Bullet Weight: 45 grains (similar to 62 grain form factor)
- Velocity: > 3,100 fps (comparable to standard 223/5.56mm ammunition)
- Chamber pressure: 33,100 psi (reduces weapon platform wear)
- Twist rate: Optimized for 1:7 (ideal for military and law enforcement)
- Functionality: Cycles in fully-automatic rifles with barrels as short as 10.5" and with suppressors
They also have a
video available that shows the effectiveness of the round against various targets.
We intend to conduct our own testing at the range as well as some testing while hunting in the coming weeks.
