How does 1 in 8 twist perform with 77gr SMKs or MK262?  What is the optimum bullet weight(s) for this twist rate?

Best I've experienced is 70 gr Sierra BTHP Match, however I had approx. 1/2 MOA @ 100yds with 80 gr. I think it just depends on the rifle as a hole, because I've used 73 gr in my 1/9 twist DPMS, after talking with the folks there.

I like high 60's grain bullets through my 1:8s. The 77's and 75's shoot pretty good.

Any of the heavy OTMs will work well.

1:8 should shoot pretty much everything good.  I've had two different 1:8 twist barrels and had no issues shooting 55, 62, 69, 75, 77 and 80 grain bullets.

Correct. the 1/8" AR in my safe shoots very well from 55gr to 75gr (that's the range I've put through it). The 75gr worked best, followed by 60gr in a close second.

I haven't had 1-8 that wouldn't shoot 77 SMKs very, very well.  The only reason the military uses 1-7 twist is for tracers which are necessarily longer.

I shot 77 grs out of my 1/8 barrels.

true

However, both of my 1:8 get the very best groups with 68 & 69 grain. 55 and 77 open up just a little. With the exception of Hornady steel match 55gr. It shoots as good as the 69 grain.

this has been my experience as well. 68gr Black Hills Moly and 69gr Federal SMK's shot the best.
Rainier Arms 14.5 and 18" match and Ultra match barrels

My 1:7 shoots the 77smk and 69 smk very well. For some reason I can't get very good groups with the OTM stuff....probably the shooters fault though :)
