Buddy found this last night and I "panic" bought 1000 this morning.

Federal American Eagle - $349.95 + $26.10 for shipping to NC =  $376.05

Just wanted a case or two of .223 practice ammo (Brown Bear 55gr) and finally found a site showing it in-stock at a good price ($250/case). Called 'em up to place my order only to find out someone had called just a few minutes before and purchased the entire 12 cases they had left.

Looks like I picked a bad time to start a new hobby. Bought a rifle last week and can't find bullets I can afford to shoot. Had 1000 round supposed to ship 11/6 now back ordered till Feb.

I'll be honest last two months I was byuing lots of ammo at cabelas and palmetto. And a times I was questioning myself. Am I paranoid. Am I overdoing it? Now checking online prices and availability I am in peace with myself. I am certain I did good.

Hello,

So will the 5.56 ammo shortage occur again like it did in 2008? Currently I have about 1250 5.56 rounds stockpiled.

We'll know for sure by inauguration day at the latest. Right now, it isn't completely dried up. All Obama has to do is mention anything about guns or ammo,  or worse, some nut goes on a shooting spree. And it won't just be 5.56....most likely anything that goes into a semi-auto of any kind.

Most people who were left high and dry last time (like me) are in better shape this time around, of course there are a lot of new gun owners too. I heard them referred to as "Obama Boomers", sort of like Baby Boomers. A lot of those ObamaBoomers that ran out and bought an AR, a handgun, and 50 rounds of ammo in  2008-2009 haven't thought of a shortage since then.

I figured if prices were to go up on ammo Dunham's Sports would be the first. So yesterday, for giggles, I stop in.  Guess what American Eagle 5.56 55gr FMJ was for a box of 20?

$14.99

That's right, $0.75 a round.

Do they really expect anyone to buy it?

And they can keep it!

40SW is still at some of the lowest prices ever so the brass and other components increase sounds like BS. The demand is causing the increases. Both perceived and real.

I knew about the pricing prior but I might just reload my ammo myself since I heard its cheaper. I have enough ammo to have fun for years so I will wait on buying the reloading equipment for now.
I love firing weapons since I had so much fun on the firing range when I was in the army with a M240 and a 50 cal on a tripod.

I'll wait till the dust settles and all the people who panicked will have all the ammo they need for a couple years and the suppliers will be burried in ammo they can't move. That's when they will try to sell it for cheap.

Price gouging will happen since people will feed the machine.  I was 18 when the first AWB went into effect and remember the aftermath, that was when I was just starting to get into shooting.  I started reloading right around the last election, best gun related buy ever.  There is a decent buy in price, but if you are the guy that will blast a few hundred rounds avery couple of weeks it will pay for it's self pretty quick.  If you think it's bad now, just wait until bills get moving.  I now fortunately have a nice collection, plenty of mags for everything, metric shit ton of ammo, and plenty of components to make more so this won't come into play for me for a year or so.  Don't know if anything will come of O being elected again, but I refuse to feed the fire as far as panic buying.  The main problem is manufacturers know people will still buy at overly inflated prices.

Not seeing much panic buying locally (yet) and the shelves are still pretty full at Sports Authority. Still, they have been
asking $49.99 for WWB 100 rd .45ACP for a while now. Ugh. They stopped carrying a lot of domestic brands in favor
of cheaper imported cartridges in plain-ish white boxes and stuff made in Western Europe. No Russian/Serbian/Mexican
ammo yet, but if prices go up more.....

I've checked a few Web sites and have seen a clear spike in sales with a couple disclaimers about shippng delays and
expected higher prices. A lot of the more popular stuff is already gone and what's left probably won't last forever.

Wishing I'd bought more 8mm.....

Many shooters I know are still stocked up from 4 years ago. They kept what they had, shot some, replaced it here and there
when they found a deal, and are going to sit tight and ride out whatever happens. I'll likely do the same. Several of us also
took the plunge and got into reloading. It helps, but I remember there being primer, bullet and powder shortages 4 years ago.

We'll see.

Remember this pile of ammo at my local Walmart?

The day before the election I stopped in and it was still there.  I checked on it the evening after the election and sure enough, it was gone.  They had three people working the ammo counter and the ammo case was nearly empty of all the common handgun and rifle cartidges.  I smiled as I walked out knowing I am sitting on a pretty decent stash.  Folks can disparage hoarders like me all they want, but it still doesn't help their situation when something triggers a run on a commodity that is produced on the margin.  Buying only the amount of ammo that you need is for people who don't understand economics and sociology.

For those of you in Ohio, or traveling through Ohio, Fin Feather Fur outfitters (located in Middleburg Hts., Ashland, and Canton) carry federal xm193 at 6.99 per box of 20.  I bought 4 cases for a total of 2000 rnds at 744.44 including tax (ashland and canton are at 6.5%, middleburg at 7.75%) so that equates to $.37 per round, better than I can find online.  I also purchased Federal xm855 420rnds in a can for $169.99 = $.42/rnd.  They have some of the best 5.56 prices I find, including out of online retailers.  And their Federal 180grn .40SW fmj at 15 bucks a box is a good deal as well.  I also put my lmt 308mwse on layaway there

Local Scheels still had tons of ammo on the shelves in all calibers tonight. Although AE223 was $11.99/20! XM193 loose pack 1000 rd case is $479, WWB 9mm is $25.99/100 and has been for weeks. Primers were decently priced grabbed 2k Winchester Small Rifle for $29.99/1000 minus 10% (old sale sign for components still up, price honored) and $5 off $50 so $49 for 2k the other day. They had many more in stock today again at the same price (except the 10% off and I think the $5 off $50 is over).

Local hardware store in my town sold pretty much all of the ammunition on the shelves.  Over 14K rounds sold in 8 hours and we are talking about a town with <5K people in it.

I actually sold an ACOG and my only .308 bolt action rifle(w/ IOR scope) locally and used the money to order reloading components.

I've definitely been buying up what I can.  Not in huge amounts but when I see a good deal on some .223 or 5.56 ammo I will buy it.   I've been buying 9mm fmj ammo at walmart every two weeks (paydays) and stocking up on that.

One way to help you with stock piling ammo for whatever reason is to keep your calibers to a minimum.   .22LR is a default and you can always get 1000s of rounds for cheap.   I primarily have 9mm handguns and my .223/5.56 AR but I do also have a .17HMR rifle (also pretty cheap) and a .270 hunting rifle (not so cheap).   The less caliber variations you have, the more you can put your money to work stocking up.   Right now I've got plenty of hollowpoint (defensive) ammo for my 9mm so I've just been buying practice ammo.

I do have to pick up some more .17HMR and I only have a few boxes of hunting ammo for the .270 but at $30+ per 20 round box I don't typically buy much of that.  :(  I just don't want to be in the same boat I was in back in 2008 when 9mm was almost impossible to find.

The local Academy Sports here had 4 1000 round boxes of XM855 on the shelf for $420 two weeks ago. They sold out in 2 days. I managed to dig through the stockpile of rifle, handgun and shotgun ammo they had to find one 1000 round box of XM193 and was happy to walk out with it for $399.

Things are getting crazy.

It did too go that way. CTD had 5.56 for $500+ a case in 08 & 09. Most places were selling it for $400+. I bought over 10k last fall for $275 a case. Federal M193. I anticipated this, & the M16 that I purchased. Barring any new legislation regulating ammo, guns, or 2A, the prices will come down. How much is anyone's guess, but people will eventually stop buying, production will overrun, shelves will pile up, & the price will come down. Of course, the devaluing of our currency may keep them at higher than normal levels though, but IMO, the price will drop. 09 compared to 11, is a drastic change. My local dealer in a town of 8,000 sold over 20k of 5.56 in a week's time, so people are definitely panic buying. At that rate, they should get their fill in 6-9 months. Just glad I saw this coming & had $ last year. YMMV
