Since M855a1 lacks the steel penetrator, will it be significantly shorter than M855?  From my experience, some 1-12 twist barrels are able to fire regular length 62 grain bullets where as M855 is about as long as a regular 69 grain bullet.

Since it is lead-free, I imagine it would be as long or longer than the "leaded" M855

Are you confusing this with SOST?  The A1 has a larger penetrator than the standard M855.  The SOST round is an OTM that has no penetrator.

I love that pic, but it is of an older design of the round.  I don't think it has that bismuth/tin alloy at the base anymore, I'm pretty sure it's just copper down there now.

You're right, the bismuth alloy slug has been replaced by a copper slug. But otherwise the current version is still as shown in the pic.

Is it as long as the M856 tracer that needs a 1:7 barrel to stabilize?

I don't have exact figures, but I'm fairly sure the M855A1 bullet is not quite as long as the M856 Tracer.

In a photo I have of M855 and M856 side-by-side, the M856 is approx 20% longer than M855.

In the pic above, M855A1 appears to be roughly 15% longer than M855.
