Hornady makes a 5.56 TAP load, but it's hard to find. Ammunitiontogo gets some in from time to time but it sells out fast.

Thats what I wanted to find the most but I cant find it anywhere. I DID find .223 TAP with 75grain bullets but want to get 5.56.

If it were me, I'd start with a metric ass-load of mil-surp from a respectable country, and get a goodly amount of decent self defense ammo. Once you have some bulk, then worry about finding the ideal load. Remember, perfection is the enemy of good enough.... and good enough is exactly that. |

don't forget that there may be a significant change in the point of aim / point of impact for different brands of ammunition and especially for different bullet weights. 55 and 62 grain are usually the cheapest to train with.

The 223 loading of 75 grn Tap puts huge holes through deer, I can tell you that much.

Plan would be to zero w/ the 75gr ammunition and then fire whatever I plan to "plink with" - I am finding some really cheap m855 which would be great to use at an outdoor range, but would I be allowed to use this @ an indoor range?? |

My post should simply be a redux of what Dr. Roberts posted. As long as you're using the right bullet type, the only difference is velocity. 5.56 is usually higher velocity and preferred, but the .223 doesn't give up a lot to it. The only difference you will see is a reduction in fragmentation range, say 130 yards vs. 110 yards.

If the 75 grn OTM at 223 velocities performs anything in humans like it does in deer it will do well, way past its fragmentation range. I had impressive results beyond 300 yards. |

For all intents and purposes they are the same, and the Hornady 75gr TAP is great stuff, if expensive.

Don't over think an AR as self defense is a pretty close realm, and you'd have a hard time convincing any jury in the world that you had to defend yourself from anyone over 20 yds away.

I'd never read the article on 223relaods.com before. I'm surprised the Barnes bullets weren't mentioned anywhere as they are in the self defense ammo article here and supposed to be a good choice for SBR's from what I understand.

If you cant find 75 TAP you can use Black hills Red or Blue 75gr OTM (almost the same type bullet) BTW I also use 223rem pressure 75gr loads in my M4 Like Forest said Frag range is more than enough for any civi |

If you remember the fact that multiple rounds to perforate your target are the perfered method and the fact that that your AR has at least 20 rounds then the whole concept of bullet selection gets a lot less complex. Any good quality bonded bullet at a decent price will work. The M855 has been pretty effective. Black Hills, Federal, Hornady etc will all work well. Just dont get caught up in the one shot stop BS.. This is another reason I like Molons 10 shot group theory. It works well on the range and in the home.

However in the real world targets move and shoot back - you might not have the time for a 2nd shot let along 10. I'm going to make EVERY shot count, just in case the threat doesn't realize he is supposed to stand there while I dump a mag into him.
