62gr M855 is most common, but there's also the M856 tracer, M997 AP, Mk262 77gr OTM, and the new 62gr barrier round, can't remember the designation.

Just got back in February and anybody that had an M4 or M16 got the M855. There is other stuff out there however, this is the most general round.

From 7 o'clock: 55 gr M193, 62 gr M855 "green tip", 62 gr M855A1-LFS, 62 gr Mk255 Mod 0 R2LP, 70 gr "brown tip", 77 gr Mk262 Mod 1



Don't forget M196 and M856 Tracer, as well as M995 AP...

Doc, can you give some info on the M855A1-LFS?  Searching results in very little from Google-the best hit being a post from you on a 6.5 Grendel forum...

That does seem to be what I am talking about-DocGKR has it listed with the "A1" in his display picture above.  To me, this looks like a "barrier-blind" enhanced version of the 855, but I'd like to know more, and neither Doc's post that I found searching for "M855A1-LFS" nor the one you linked to does more than describe the bullet.  Does this new round meet the new standards in the slides you posted a while back for "low flash" and "better accuracy" while penetrating barriers better?  Is it going to completely replace the 855, or only in certain units/missions/situations?

Brown Tip 5.56mm for Short Barrels
May 16, 2008:  U.S. SOCOM (Special Operations Command) has used its own, bureaucracy free, budget to design and manufacture special ammunition for the short barrel (10-15 inch) weapons (like the M-4 and SCAR Light). The new ammo, referred to as "5.56 Optimized", or "brown tip" (because the tips of the bullets are brown for easy identification) uses a bullet that is solid copper and 70 grains in weight (compared to 62 grains for the NATO standard 5.56 bullet). The solid copper design is believed to be based on a commercial design (the Barnes Triple-Shock X) that was introduced five years ago. The new round was designed to achieve better accuracy and hitting power at the ranges (under 300 meters) the short barrel weapons are most effective at. The brown tip ammo costs more, because of its unique design and small production runs, but SOCOM doesn't worry about that when it's for something that will make its operators more effective, and help keep them alive.
