The gun shop guy tells me this is exactly the same as Federal XM193 5.56 M193 Ball from the brown box with the LC and Nato stamps on it.

Is this true?

The American Eagle box has a ballisitics table printed on it showing a muzzle velocity of 3240 ft/sec., which seems the same as the Lake City Stuff.

If it says XM193C on the box, then yes it is pretty much the same.

If the box looks something like this:

Then it is not the same as brown box XM193.

The AE223 is pretty good stuff though. Hard to find it anywhere cheap. How much is he asking?

Ripper,

The box is exactly like that, except that it says "20 Rifle Cartridges" instead of "50 Pistol Cartridges."

Molon,

I don't see anything on the box that says anything about the barrel length on the ballistics tests.  Where did you read that 24" barrels were used?

Brown box Federal LC 55gr with the Nato stamp on it chronoed at 3197 ft/sec out of my 16" HBAR Bushmaster on a hot day not long ago.  When I get a chance, I'll chrono some of this stuff.

I paid $210.00 for 500 rounds.

What pi$$e$ me off is that before June 30, I was getting the LC stuff for $199 per 500 rounds on sale.  Now it's up to $240.00.  I bought the AM to save 30 bucks.

I've e-mailed Federal with this question.  We'll see what their answer is in a few days.

Are you sure that the headstamp reads LC on that AE stuff?  Might it be FC?

That's some nice info on that ATK/LE website, great find!

Oh by the way, that Federal A/E .223 is not as hot a load as the Federal Lake City 5.56mm stuff.

That settles it.

I wonder what the muzzle velocity is out of my 16 in.  A lot less, probably.  Maybe I'll get a chance to chrono this week.

Wouldn't it be unsafe to sell 223 ammo the same as XM193?

The other way around maybe. If the dealer said "this is only 223, it will be fine in your match gun." But it was really XM or some 5.56 ammo, then yes that would be unsafe.

What he did was just dishonest(or ignorant) and may lose a customer because of it.

About the velocity:

I was actually looking for some info on it out of a 16" barrel when I came across that web site. I remember it being around 3000 fps last time I saw data on it. I still have some AE223 left so I'd like to find out again.

Well, my AR hasn't been fired much.  I'll just use this AE stuff to finish breaking it in.

They let me trade it in on some of the Black box (tactical) stuff and pay the difference.  It has the L C stamp on it.

I'll try to chrony some of it this coming week and put up the results.

That's the good stuff.

It should be around 3150 FPS out of a 16" barrel.

I am in the process of going through my third 500 rd case of Fed AE with LC headstamps. 3 out of 5 cases have had LC, the other 2 cases had FC headstamps. Two were 05 and that most recent has 07.

I was pretty happy to find the LC cases, been keeping the empties for reloading
