What is the Best Densive .223 Ammo?

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum and have a question about what ammo I should put in my M4 for home defense. I just got my first M4 (Bushmaster XM15) and slapped and eotech 512 and a A.R.M.S. flip up rear sight on it. Anyways about the ammo I am in search of a round that causes a significant trauma (Hollow Point), Reliable, and accurate to a certain degree. I have family living in my home aswell and a round that would not over penetrate would be great a plus. Although I never want to shoot anyone... Everyone who has endagered my family in my dwelling will. I just want to make sure that if I ever have to shoot someone for the reason listed above that the round will do the trick.

Depends.

On my 1:7 barrels I keep three mags loaded with Hornady TAP FPD 75gr BTHP. Accurate, works well enough.

But then again, that is my opinion. take it for what it's worth.

The truth is that most good 55-77 Gr. bullets will get the job done, but the heavier 77/75/69/68 Gr. BTHP bullets are the better choices. But don't feel undepowererd withe something like the Hornady 55 Gr. TAP, just as long as you understand that the lighter bullets are not great against barriers.

That is very true.

Hitting the target is primary, having the skills and mindset is much more imporant than the ammo selected. But as long as your selecting ammo, buy the best (From the Ammo Forum List) that will reliably feed and is accurate from YOUR rifle.

The best ammo for your gun is ammo you have function checked and sighted in correctly.

I'm getting good enough information here... you guys all reply so fast... I know that ball ammo would do the trick just the same but this ammo is not going to be ammo i shoot at the range everyday. (too expensive) However my rifle will most definately be sighted in for it and reliability is a must. thanks for all the info anyways . i think i am going to get a box of hornady tap and take it to the range to see how it handle/ feeding/ reliability/ accuracy/ ect.

Which TAP? It comes in at least 3 weights.

(hint the 75gr is the only that meets FBI and IWBA criteria).

I buy 75gr TAP and Black Hills Blue Box.

However I now have the components now to load my own.

I've not worked out which powder I'm going to use yet. The follow are being experimented with:
WCC844
Varget
H322

Brass is once fired LC with CCI primers.

For bullets I've got the Hornady 75gr OTM. The only difference is mine don't have the cannalure (not available currently as a reloading component) so I'll be using the Lee FCD (like I do with my 6.8 loads).

Where are you getting the 75 grn OTM from?

There is a sporting goods store in York PA that I hit up everytime I go to the range. I pick them up there. I got a couple of boxes at really good price (I guess they were old stock), the most recent cost me something like $23/100.

I know another shop up in CT that has them in stock(albeit at a slightly higher price).
