Hey Gang

I have been reading the ammo forum for a couple of weeks now and I am a little bit overwhelmed.  I have a Stag 16" carbine and am not sure what I should be feeding it.
I have put a box of UMC through it, a box of winchester varmint hollow points, and 2 boxes of winchester white box.........all with no problems.  I just picked up 250 rounds of the Wolf polymer stuff but havent shot it yet.

The thing is, I keep reading about ammo failures that are destroying rifles, squibs.....overcharges...bad casings.etc.  I dont want my rifle to blow up!

I am new to the AR, I have an AK style rifle that shoots everything i cram down its throat without a problem.

I want to stick with one kind of ammo.
I want to find something that is safe, reliable and reasonably accurate that will be used for plinking, range practice and if needed a self defense round.  of course I would like something inexpensive, but if i need to pay top dollar i will.

Can anyone please make a reccomendation and help me out?

Thankx much!!
P.Smith

Try some m193.

speaking of ammo confusion, what is the difference between m193 and Q3131?

Q3131 and Q3131A?

The Ammo Oracle is vague on that point. I thought initially that m193 was Federal and Q3131 was Winchester, but I think m193 is more of a generic term for 55 grain milspec 5.56.

You got it right.  IVe gotten in lots of M193 from Lake City, Winchester, and Federal off the top of my head (mostly Lake City though)

with the 3131 and 3131A the difference is just one was made in Israel and the other in the US.

You pretty much have it right that M193 and Q3131 are the same, they both are loaded to the same mil spec as are alot of other types of 5.56 55gr ammo.  But that doesn't mean all 55gr ammo is M193.

To the OP, don't worry so much about the threads you have read about people blowing up their AR's, it's a pretty rare thing.  As long as you stick with major brand ammo manufactuers you will be fine. Just stay away from non big name manufactured reloads.
Most peoples AR's will eat anything you feed it.

Some good choices are:
American Eagle .223
Federal XM193
Winchester white box
Federal XM855
Winchester M855
Quatamalen M193
and even though there are alot of rumors about this ammo (mostly BS) Wolf

Hey Smith, hows that rifle I sold you working out?
I feed mine either Lake City XM193 or Winchester 3131a. These rounds are loaded to 5.56 pressure. They are pretty accurate, reliable and pack a decent punch.
Another good choice is Federal AE223 which is loaded to 223 pressure.. You'll get a little less velocity out of this stuff, but it's clean and accurate.
I'm not a fan of Wolf, but a lot of people use it.

Hey lefty
I love the Stag..............Nothin but fun!

Is the lake city Xm193 and winchester stuff available locally.......like at gander mountain or Bass pro?  Or is it only available online, and if so where is a good place to get it?

Thanks again.

Wolf is good ammo.  Do not let anyone scare you on it.  For Defense use a M193 or M855 whichever you like.

Check the Ammo price list thread tacked to the top of the forum.  You'll pay a premium for XM193 but my philosophy is, why cheap out on ammo at the risk of an expensive rifle?

iI shoot a Stag lefty M4gery and have put Adcom, Radway, and Wolf polymer thru it. I did have a couple of FTE with the Wolf but that was when the rifle was still being broken in. I have shot almost 1 k Wolf thru it since without a problem. Just got another 3K of Wolf that I will use for plinking. The 5.56 stuff I will keep back for awhile and see what happens after the Dems get the House back. Ammo access may be a whole different issue in the near future. Just my 2 cents.

Semper Fi!

Federal American Eagle 55-grain FMJ.

Look no further- it meets all your criteria.

I'm not sure there is an ammo type out there that hasn't  kaboomed, so you need to set down those fears.  Any round you fire could kaboom oon you, just as any time you walk across the stret, you could get smooshed by the beer truck.
