What it's not:
Steel cores that small usually have a boat tail on the back end. The penny doesn't help me much for scale, but i believe 5.56 'green tips' have a mild steel core and they would have the tapered back end. The ogive he What it is: My best guess is the penny pointer.ETA Where did you find it? any more details on it? |

It is somewhere between .177 and .22 caliber and very, very hard. A blade won't even scratch it.

Is is steel or tungsten carbide?
I thought the penetrators in the slap rounds were tungsten carbide. Basically a discarding sabot light armor piercing round. I think tungsten is non-ferrous. |

It is not a M855 or SS109 penetrator tip, they are a fraction of the size.

The 7.62mm SLAP (Saboted Light Armor Penetrator) was developed by the USMC in the '80s. Along with the 7.62mm version, a similar round for the M2 .50 caliber Machine Gun was also put in service. The 7.62mm round was given the designation M948, and the .50 cal. M903. Both rounds used a Tungsten Penetrator encased in a discarding sabot. The 7.62mm SLAP is no longer in use, because of problems with the sabot breaking up while still in the bore, causing catastrophic failure as the penetrator pierced through the side of the barrel. The .50 caliber M903, was very successful, and will penetrate 3/4" High Hard Armor at 1500 meters. A round similar to the SLAP round used to be sold by Remington, called the "Accelerator". It fired a 50-55 gr .22 cal softpoint bullet in a .30 caliber sabot. They loaded it in .308, .30-06, and .30-30. It had a muzzle velocity around 4100 feet per second. |

I have seen the reloading components for something similar in 7.62mm for sale.
308 Sabots, converts to 4000fps 223 (per 100) £17.95 A plastic 'wrap' into which you place your chosen 5.56mm bullet, then seat into the case as a normal 7.62mm bullet. Not be used with muzzle breaks / suppressors

See if a magnet attracts/sticks to it. I think it's a tungsten penetrator; it's the right color and the right size for a .30 cal round.

It is attracted to a magnet. So, are the 7.62mm SLAP rounds dangerous to use in any weapon, or just the belt fed LMGs? |

I suppose it depends on how badly you want to fire them. Aside from the failures of the sabot, the 7.62mm SLAP did not improve much on the armor piercing ability of the 7.62 round.
I am not sure on what causes the sabot to fail in the 7.62mm, it may have been from barrel heat. But since the USMC has other weapons in 7.62mm like the M40-A1, their decision to discontinue its use leads me to believe that there are some serious issues. The .50 caliber round doesn't have the issues of the 7.62. Is it because the .50 barrels are stellite lined, or maybe the sabot is beefy enough to handle the stress of firing? The .50 uses a penetrator thats basically .30 caliber in size, so the wall thickness of the sabot will be about .100". If the 7.62 penetrator is say .200 in diameter, that only makes the wall thickness of the sabot at around .054 or so. Thats roughly half as thick as the sabot used in the .50 round. |
