I toss a pack of silica gel into each ammo can. I just use silica gel that I find packed with electronics. My ammo cans have excellent seals, so I'm not worried about moisture penetrating the ammo cans.

Uncented kittly litter (the krystals) in pantyhose knotted at both ends works for me.

Large dessicant packs come in motorcycle, ATV, and watercraft crates.
Most dealers throw em away. Call around to the local shops and talk to the service managers, they may just hook you up for dirt cheap or free. DaddyDett |

I get all of mine from shoe boxes, the women in my family are buying shoes for what seems like non stop so they save them for me and I have more than enough plus I like the fact they are little so I can stick them all over the place inside my ammo boxes

I used RICE in my big can that I cant even pick up when loaded? I put the rice in it in 1998 and open it yesterday to get some handgun ammo and its just FINE!
Also my Wife buys so many shoes I use all here little packages that come in the Shoe Box  Dont really need to buy the stuff? |

Am I missing something on desiccant? How long can a small pack last and does it have any absorbency left after going into a shoebox or DVD player box in China crossing the Pacific, sitting in a warehouse for awhile then on the shelf of a store for a month or more?
The desiccant I bought came in a large container of 300. It states on the container "Remove lid slowly to remove air" "Reseal container immediately after opening to protect contents" I have the container lined with 2 plastic trash bags that fold over the seal. When I seal a ammo can I do not open it until I need it. The contents and all info on the ammo is printed on a shipping tag and attached to the handle so I never have to open it to check the contents. I will keep doing it this way because I am comfortable about the protection the desiccant provides. Am I being a little to anal about this and wasting a lot of time and $$? |

Depends on your environment. If you live in the desert, probably too anal about it. OTOH, what you are doing will help your ammo last a lot longer.
If you ever need to dry the desicant out, toss it on a pie plate in the oven @ 300° for a while. That'll dry it up real nice. |

I'm in the KC area. It gets very damp and humid around here. Besides that, we occasionally get some very heavy rains (it's supposed to dump on us any minute now), sometimes my basement will take some water, so at times it can get more than "damp". Of course the basement is where I keep my my ammo. I buy ammo like others buy stocks or bonds. Call me fatalistic, I call myself a realist. I've got a LOT of ammo stored, the last thing I want is my investment comprimised in anyway. I've been buying silica gel from a place called

He's got the best prices of anyone on the net, especially if you buy in quantity. Personlly I buy the 4 gram aluminum canisters, I know it's overkill, but I pay less for those than I do 50 cal ammo cans. The nice thing is they are easily "refreshed" in the oven, they have a quick sight window so you can check if the silica gel needs to be refreshed, and the size is ideal, 4"X2"X1/4" This size will give 3 CU FT of protection. They also have every size packet known to man. I've ordered from them twice, the product arrives quickly. Their website shows every size and how much area that size will protect. Hope this helps. |

I got a bunch of big ones from two sources for free. I had a friend that fixed copiers. Big dessicant packs was put in with the photo-sensitive drum thingy for fixing copiers. Another source was a friend who worked at a technology company. Computer chips are often shipped with dessicant. Just ask around. Shok |

My brother is the head of a company that uses a lot of packaged parts. I called him yesterday and asked if he had access to the packs, he said no problem, and 24 hours later droped off a five pound bag of different sizes. he said they throw away that much each day. Check all you buddies in the electrionics biss.

If you have air-tight ammo cans that you are putting them into (along w/Ammo), then indefinitely, or at least until the seal wears out, which has to be 40+ years AS LONG AS YOU DONT OPEN THEM. I got ammo cans from the 60s that still have decent seals. Once all the oxygen and moisture is sucked out of the can, its as good as a vacuum seal. Which BTW, If you want to take things a step further then vacuum seal your ammo w/dessicant instead. Actually in the long run this is probably cheaper than ammo cans. But again, seeing a big stack of full ammo cans is like "ammo porn" ! |

Your right about the ammo porn aspect. Sometimes I go into the garage and look at my cars then check out the gun safe, and last but not least check out the pallet of full ammo cans, all neatly labeled. It can make a so so day good. Looking at all that ammo is almost enough to get me aroused.

Are you ordering from somewhere else? Use money orders. If buying in-town, use cash. How do you think she gets a lot of her stuff without letting you know? Credit cards -- sheesh -- giving away intel is never a good idea. Make her work for it.

Pharmacies pull dessicant packs out of pill bottles all day long. If you go to an independent pharmacy, ask the pharmacist/owner if he and his staff will save them for you the next day. Maybe call a day or two ahead with your refill order and ask them to give you what they saved when you come in to pick up your Rx.

Unfortunately the wife IS the bookkeeper (accountant). $ coming or going whether it is ATM or checks, etc. I stash a bit away every now and then for a toy buy. She is tight and rarely buys things. I could go all out if I wanted but I may start HER spending and I don't want to venture down that road if I can help it--may not make it back!

A substance, such as calcium oxide or silica gel, that has a high affinity for water and is used as a drying agent. Exited to add. I am a terrible speller so I visit there a lot. When you Googled it this is what came up first. "Did you mean: Desiccant" The company I buy it from, Uline spells it desiccant as does Jakesmp both mentioned in this thread. Plus the dictionary also spells it desiccant. I don't care how some scientific journal or periodic table etc. spells it. The reason I even brought this up is my spelling is not the best and I noticed desiccant spelled so many different ways I just wanted to mention it. I am not correcting anyone just trying to share. Not to be ignorant here, most of those desiccants are non-indicating. How can you tell if they are still functioning? I know you can mark the weight on the bags, then weigh it when you open your ammo can. Do you guys actually do that?
The Kristal kitty litter is a pain. It creates a lot of fine dust like sand. Don't think my AR would like it. The best I find is this: http://www.remington.com/products/accessories/storage_&_safety/model_365_mini-Dehumidifier.asp I keep one in my AR case and re-charge it every week or two. |

Silica gel packs. A few different sizes and these are renewable. Reactivate by baking them in the oven for a period of time.
