Does anyone know if it is possible to tell the difference between a Q3131 and a Q3131-A round just by looking at the rounds not the boxes they came in (the headstamp maybe)?

Anyone? I'm just trying to find out what I have. I have a whole bunch of one or the other I'm just trying to find out which is which due to the talk here that the Q3131-A is better than the Q3131. I just bought some Q3131 today brand new (05) and it has the NATO cross on it as the Ones in question do not have the NATO cross on it. I have some Q3131-A (and I know for fact that it is Q3131-A because I bought them 3 weeks ago and loaded up the three mags that I keep at the ready (I pulled the rounds in these mags out because they are rather old and put the Q3131-A in them). On the known Q3131-A the headstamp says WCC 04 (but no NATO cross). So is it safe to assume that all Q3131 will have the NATO cross and the Q3131-A will not have the NATO cross on them?

3131a is made for Win by IMI and has TZZ head stamp.  It good stuff.  Ill buy it any day of the week.  3131 has WCC headstamp.  Its   also good stuff, cant get enough of it.    The nato cross dosent mean squat because the 3131 has brass with and without it.  Most of mine runs about  half with it and half without.   I just hope the  3131 stays around for a long time.

Doesn't the new production Q3131 have an odd looking crimp on it? That would be one way to tell

Well I guess I misunderstood. Everything I read says that Q3131-A is made by IMI and is prefered over Q3131. If Q3131-A is really made by IMI and my boxes said Winn. 5.56 mm Q3131-A and the headstamp doesnt say TZ?? on it anywhere then it isnt made by IMI? I dont know I'm just trying to sort out the Q3131 from the Q3131-A I was hoping that there was a difference on the headstamps to tell the 2 apart from one another guess not. I loaded up a 30 rounder with all known Q3131-A and they say the same thing as the ones Im trying to sort out. (And I know there are some Q3131 in there mixed with the Q3131-A). Why is it that everyone prefers the Q3131-A over the Q3131? I just bought 2 new boxes of each and I really coundnt tell the 2 apart they both look well made.

Easiest way is to look at the primer.

Q3131 is US manufacture and will have a red sealant around the primer.  It's also more likely to be sloppy.

Q3131 is IMI manufacture and they use a dark purple/almost black colored primer sealer.

Just check for that ring around around the primer - the color will tell you.

Not correct. The IMI M193 that Wideners sold a couple years ago had TZZ stamps. My Q3131A has WCC 00 stamps.

Isn't there a question of whether flash retardant  is used in the 3131 and I was also under the impression that earlier lots of 3131 were not up to Nato specs as far as velocity. The 3131A is loaded to Nato specs from my understanding and am unsure of the flash retardant.

I have a few rounds of each.  All my Q3131A loads have the WCC 03 on them.  How ever, the letters WCC have a dot between them and no NATO cross.  The Q3131 loads that I have WCC close together, with 04 and the NATO cross.

just so folks know what is being talked about here:
1) Q3131 made in USA from 85-ish to 99-ish.  hot, but some 99 lots were borked up.
2) Q3131A made in Israel (IMI) from 00-ish to 2005-ish.  good stuff.
3) Q3131 made in USA from 2005-ish onward.  note, case headstamps vary.

shown below is the "new" USA-made Q3131.

I didnt know that,  I thaught all 3131A was made by IMI.  I was getting  it in July for  $185 per case, now $220 from the same local shop.

Q3131A is made by IMI for Winchester with WCC headstamps. IMI also make an M193 with its own name with TZZ headstamps.

WHere are you getting current Q3131A. I would like to try some since I don't care for Q3131.
I found a box with two missing and pretty beat up recently at a sporting good store. Forgot to takeit last time I went shooting.
