Quite some time ago I was sold some 40 S&W for use in my 10mm Glock and Baretta. I believe the person that sold it to me thought it was like using .38 ammo in a .357. Can this ammo be used for practice in these guns? I have heard that they should not and they might damage the guns.

A little help?

Uh, no.

There is also an ammunition board on the Handgun forum.

No, it cannot be used. 10mm and .40 S&W are headspaced on the case mouth so if you drop a .40 S&W into a 10mm chamber it will just slide forward , you may be able to make the gun fire, but it is not safe.

The only way to shoot  .40 out of a 10mm is in a revolver that uses clips like a S&W 610

Beretta never made a 10m/m. It would clear things up if you were to include the model numbers of your pistols. Technically, a .40S&W is a 10m/m, but it is NOT THE 10m/m Automatic!

Provide the models and you can be given a definitive answer.  If you have a Glock 20, it IS a 10m/m Automatic. If you have a Beretta, the closest thing they make is a couple of .40S&W models.

Someone is trying to either kill or hurt you. Don't trust them ever again, unless the thought you were using a S&W 610 revolver to shoot the ammo.

Now that you have the 40, you can get a G22.

At least you can use the same reloading dies for both calibers.

I think he means a .40SW Beretta and 10mm Glock...darn this inaccurate language!

Sorry for the confusion but when I bought them years ago I was told they were 10 mm. Actually they are:

Glock 22  40 SW
Baretta 96 40 cal

These were my previous HD guns. After coming to this site I have found I know nothing. Where can I read something about this caliber and these two guns?

Thanks again!

If those are the firearms you are talking about, yes you can shoot the 40 cal ammo in them.  That is what they are.

Glad this was cleared up. Now if they had sold you real 10m/m Auto ammo and you tried to use it in either of those pistols, it would have been very obvious that it was the wrong stuff!

10mm and 40sw  use the same size bullets!

but you cant use it like a 357 and a 38spl

use only 40sw ammo only in your 40sw  handguns

technically a .357mag is a 9mm

? 355 is 9mm

also lead is different size than Copper jacket type

DONT reload 9mm Bullet  in a 357magnum Might cause some problems

.38, .357 = 9mm Diameter Bullet

.40 = 10mm Diameter Bullet

Actually, .38Spec/.357Mag = .357 dia (cal) and 9m/m Para = .355 dia (cal).

I thought that most production auto pistols tended to cut their chambers a little long and headspace was more of a function on the extractor than the chamber?

The big difference between 10mm and .40S&W, beside the ~.12",  is that 10mm uses large pistol primers and .40 uses small pistol primers.

What would be dangerous about putting .40S&W in a 10mm exactly?  If the round slid into the chamber there would not be enough room for a second round to get stuck behind it.  Plus the .40 pressures are much much lower.  I can see the pistol not functioning or being a single shot or jamming up super weird

Well, here is some more info for you.  A glock model 22 is .40 smith and wesson, a glock model 20 is 10mm.  The .40  smith and wesson and the 10mm have the same bullet diameter.  The casing on the 10mm is longer so you can pack more powder in it making it more powerful than the 40 s&w.  If you want to shoot 40 s&w out of a 10mm you need to buy a conversion barrel.  If you're not sure which model you have the model # is stamped on the middle of the slide and if you want more info go to www.glocktalk.com

Wow, this thread gets "Idiot Redundancy of the Year" Award.

Are any of you reading any of the other posts on this thread, or are you just spitting out late-night/early-morning dreary-eyed thought train explosions?

I like  it. Moon clips

I wish I would of bought the 640 in 9mm instead of 38spl

I bet its faster than a 38 speed loader?

plus better ballistics?

BTW sorry I said it

Checked Speer No.11 Reloading Manual;  9mm=.355" NOT .357"

Doing so is danergous, the two are not designed to be interchanged in any way.
Do some independant research on "headspace"
