With so many different ammo choices I can't decide.  I'm looking to buy large quantities for home defense/range practice.  Ammoman has some 5.56mm frangible USGI, 820rnds for $239 that I've kind of been looking at.  Then again, I can buy .223 from Wal-Mart, 820rnds for approx. $160.  What do you guys suggest?

Each gun is different, so try some of each before you buy in bulk.  I have 2 Bushmasters, an A2 and a V-Match, both with 16 Inch barrels and RedDot sights.  After shooting several different loads I have narrowed the field down to 3.

1 - Black Hills blue box 68 OTM   This will shoot 1 inch 5 shot groups if I do my part.

2 - XM193  These will do 3 1/2 inch 10 shot groups.

3 - WWB 55 FMJ  These will do 3 inch 10 shot groups.

All shooting is at 100 yds.

The Black Hills and WWB are easy to get locally and the man at WalMarts sporting goods counter here is also a shooter, so he is easy to deal with.

Others here are more experienced with AR's than myself, so I'm sure they will have something better to offer.

Have fun and with spring fast on the way, remember to keep an eye to the sky.

Leonard

For just practice ammo, I would buy the WWB(Winchester White Box)55gr.(USA223R1VP) ammo from walmart in the 40 round packs. Runs around $7.75 + tax. It  is also a reasonable, but not best, solution for self defense. For recommendations on the best ammo for self defense, read the AR15 ammo oracle:
www.ammo-oracle.com/

The concensus seems to be that heavier bullets are better for self defense, unless you live in a apartment building and are concerned about overpenetration. If you want something better than the WWB 55gr for self defense, try different bullet weights and see how they perform in your bushmaster. I have a 16" 1:9 twist bushmaster and it works fine out to 300+ yards with bullets up to 75grain. YMMV. Hornady TAP 75gr seems to be the concensus top choice.
If you want to keep it simple and you don't have to have the latest and greatest thing, the WWB can be your practice and self defense ammo. Then you only need to learn one ammo for your gun.

I get excellene groups with the WWB from Wal Mart. In my Varminter around an inch or less and in my 16 inch Bushy 1  1/4 to 1 1/2 inch 5 shot groups.  The federal XM193 shoot really nice in both also. Just get 4 or 5 boxes of different ammo and test them in YOUR gun to see what it likes.

Are you guys suggesting the WWB .223(USA223R) or 5.56mm(Q3131A)?

Both. But Q3131A is hard to come by today.

USA223R1VP is good for the price. Plus, save and sell the brass on the EE if you don't reload.

Bushmaster, AFAIK, is the only manufacturer to APPROVE of using Wolf ammo through the barrels. Everyone else shrieks about using Wolf ammo through their "match" barrels, exclaiming something like "would you run 87 octane through your Mercedes Benz???" (yes I would if the owner's manual called for it).

WWB 40rd value packs at Walmart ($7.73/40 + tax) is a real steal, however only if you can find it at your Walmart. None of the local Walmarts near me have it, or its sold out. Meijers DOES carry it, but the few times I've seen it in stock the boxes were torn and people stole a few cartridges (they could have stole crappy Remington UMC or heck, even Wolf, but no... they had to tear the box to WWB 40rd value pack)

Frangible is for shooting steel / use inside shoot houses.  It's not a good round for paper punching or home defense.

Alright, I just placed an order for a case (1,000rnds) of the 5.56mm Winchester (Q3131A) from my local gun shop.  The total came to $240 and some change.

Where are they getting Q3131A? I haven't shot any but the Q3131 is horrible as far as accuracy in my weapons. I would like to try some since its made in Israel and everything I have shot thats Israeli made was fantastic.

My suggestion is to take half of it and put it in a 50cal ammocan for later use. Then go buy a couple cases of the USA223R1VP from Walmart for regular use.

Am I missing something on the WWB .223 at Walmart and Meijers?  Everyone I've been to and called so far has had it but it's $13.XX

I'm looking at the 40 mega packs, but what am I missing?

Wally-World has two Win loadings. One is 55gr FMJ @ $7.73 bx. The other is 45gr SP Varmint @ $13+ bx.  What everyone is refering to as WWB is the 55gr FMJ.

Alright, thanks for the update.  Now I'm just assuming that not all Walmarts carry the 55 grain stuff?

They could be out of it. One store told me it was deleted so I hit all the stores that had ammo.
Some got some more in and I grabbed it also.
