I really gotta know.  What in the world kind of shtf situation do you guys envision where you would need to stockpile thousands of rounds?  It's good to be prepared, but some of you have enough ammo to supply the troops in Iraq for a year.

Is it some sort of Red Dawn situation?  Are you going to be fighting off the advances of the Chinese or the Cubans?

It is also to hedge off future price increases and possible shortages.  Sucks to love to shoot and not have any ammo to enjoy it.  Keep in mind for a lot of us shooting means going to the range with 500-1,000 of ammo so the 5 or 8k of ammo we have is only enough to get us through 3 or 4 months.

It is nice not have to run to the FunStore to buy ammo.  I have enough ammo to allow me to shoot 1k a weekend for the next 15 weekends.  I am always buying ammo.

It is quite simple actually, prices on ammo rarely go down.  It is best to buy it in bulk if your budget can afford it as a hedge against future price increases and/or shortages.  This is particularly true of surplus ammo which can dry up over night.

Look at what happened with Hurricane Katrina, lots of people needed to defend their homes and most stores were closed or restricted from selling ammo.  It is a good feeling to know that you have 20 mags of quality ammo loaded with 5 cases setting for backup.

It is also cheaper to order by the case.

The local LE stopped gun/ammo sales during Hurricane Rita, too.  Luckily I had a good stock of ammo.  Plenty of people thought I was stupid/weird before it hit.  Afterwards was a different story however.

Arrgh...tough question for sure.  Yeh...ammo is only going up.  I remember when quality 5.56 was $.15 ea.  OK to stockpile if your wife approves, or doesn't know.    In a SHTF situation, my opinion is that you are only going to be able to expend a certain number of rounds before you are "toast".  Dunno what that number is, but say it is a few hundred.  After that the exercise is a waste.  Guess I am a bit fatilistic about end of the world/SHTF scenarios.

I am fighting the hoarding instinct.  Ammo isn't gonna get you to Heaven.  That said...I still want more.

1) In the event of a serious disaster, ammo supplies may dry up for a long, long time.  A true SHTF situation will outlast me.

2) It's cheaper.  Prices keep going up.  Buy as much as possible as soon as possible.

3) It's conceivable that ammunition for our guns could be banned if bad things happen politically, so buy it while you can.  I also keep buying magazines as much as possible for this same reason.  If I never use it, I can pass it on to the next generation.

4) It's cool to look at a big pile of ammo crates.

But seriously , ammo really never goes down ,and its on a trend upwards historicly. Might as well keep some back. Some people keep 10k-20k rounds onhand. I might not ever go through that ammount in my life , but for some people, thats only a couple of hours worth of fun. I really wish my ammo stores were higher than they are right now.......someday :)

What exactly do you consider a stock pile?  When we go out to shoot we may shoot off 2000 to 5000 rounds in an afternoon of various calibers which makes 10 or 20K stockpile look pretty small.

How the hell do some people here eat and shoot?  Even with cheap stuff you are talking 5000 rounds being about $600.00 for an afternoon.  How often can you shoot that much?   Is the place you work for hiring?

I'm not trying to be an ass.... I just envy you!

I used to think 1K was a heck of a lot of ammo. "Man, I'll never shoot this much up in 10 years". Then I started going to the range on a regular basis and went, "Man, I'm OUT, I can't believe I shot it all up, I must have some more somewhere".

You'd be surprised how much ammo you can go thru when you can walk out back and go shooting. Needless to say, brass piles up quite fast.

We went thru 13-15K in 4 hours last fall at a private shoot. Every time my son and I go to the range anymore we burn at least 1K of ammo, sometimes more. FALs, Garands, ARs, m14s, and of course the 1911.

Here are my reasons

1)  It's a pain in the ass to run to the gunstore/walmart/dicks when you want to go to the range and find you have no ammo.

2) it will never be cheaper (this applies to everything)

3) SHTF? Who knows what could happen. Could be Katrina, could be Red Dawn, could be Mad Max. I'm an Eagle Scout, and I believe in being prepared.

4) ATF did a study during their Reign of Terror under Klinton, and they decided the most effective way to control firearms (read: disarm those opposed to socialism) was to cut off the supply of ammo as most shooters do not keep very much on hand. Go after the ammo mfgrs, as well as cut off the pool of reloading supplies. Ask the older gents here about the primer famine of 1994.

I agree......I remember the Clinton primer scare, too, so now there are 10,000 of each type of primer stored in a cool dry place on the property!
With the prospect of the other Clinton looming on the horizon as a candidate, I'm thinking about hidden storage areas, MREs, ammo, doubling the ammo and primer count, freeze-dried lawyers, etc.....

I evacuated for Katrina and took all my ammo(3000 rounds) with me. While I was up north, I made it a point to go wal-mart jumping and bought another 1800 rounds between various wal-marts.

I just wasn't sure what I was going to come back to 2 days after the storm.

How about the real world scenario where certain types of ammo I prefer gets hard to find and more expensive to buy when I do find it.

That's all the reason I need to get as much as I can when I find it for a good price and stockpile ammo so I always have some on hand when I want to go shooting.

Keeping a nice stock of ammo for all your guns is never bad thing...

You're not imagining hard enough!!    Do you do much shooting?  If you do much shooting, then you'd know how easy it is to go through a few hundred rounds in just an hour or two at the range.  In a hostile environment with tons of aggressive bad guys, you'll go through the ammo even faster.  A few thousand rounds is NOT that much.

1) Ammo never goes down in price. 2) A gun without ammo is a fancy club. 3) importation can be cut off wth the stroke of a pen. 4) you won't be able to get any/enough if you wait til there is a disaster going on - the first thing the govt does is make selling guns/ammo illegal.

5) having lived through the primer famine, and continual cries by Moynihan and his cronies to put huge taxes on ammo, I vowed to never be at their mercy again.

It's nothing to go through 500-1000 rds in a day long shooting session.
