There's no "steel tipped" ammunition. What exactly are you talking about? Non-FMJ ammo?

I guess it would be FMJ. I was shooting ADCOM 5.56 at an indoor range and was told to stop shooting it because it has a steel core. Supposedly their rules are no tracer, armor piercing or military surplus ammo. Basically I am looking for what ammo I can use in indoor ranges.

well, basically any domestically produced commercial ammo should be lead core.

Yeah - M855 hs a steel core (not tip), and that could do a number on their backstop.

So would the Federal Lake City surplus ammo be lead cored and O.K. for indoor ranges? I tried to find the specs on this ammo and couldn't and was wondering because AIM has 1,000 rounds of the lake city for $179.00.

yeah same thing happened to me. Bought 1000 rounds and didnt notice it said steel core. Went to my local range on Saturday with my first rifle and the clerk was able to pick a round up with a magnet. Now im looking for regular stuff that is safe for indoor ranges.

It all depends on the range you're going to. Some say "Non-FMJ bullets only". Others check for steel with a magnet. It's best to check ahead of time.
There's some ranges who check with magnets, and pick up the CASE of Wolf ammo. Wolf is steel cased, but has no steel in the bullet. Many times people have been turned away by ignorant workers because the case is magnetic. |

It also refers to "military surplus ammo" That could mean XM193 or possibily Q3131a as well. I would clarify what exactly they mean. Dr. |

If it is not SS109 or M855 you should be good to go.
