The SAW has a 1/7 barrel.

damn for the life of me I cant remember the twist rate, but I know the full size barrel length was 18" and that somehow FN figured that out as the optimum barrel length. In fact the M855 round was developed around the SAW, as twist rates on the M16 were modified to accomodate the M855 ammo

Yeah the only reason I was asking is that in several gun books and magazines, and even a few websites list it as 1/12 and I remembered the round being made for it... so it didnt make sense. thanks for the info.

The M249 is a 1/7 twist, it's a compromise between the 1/9 that is optimal for M855, and the 1/6 that is optimal for the longer tracer rounds, I don't think i've ever seen/heard of a 1/12 SAW. Maybe someone rebarreled it, but I think it's more likely that someone just dicked up writing the article (or wherever that info came from).
