As I was perusing the latest Cabelas catalog, I came across the most interesting new item they have for save: Perma-Gel Ballistic Gelatin

Perma-Gel™ Ballastic Gelatin Use Perma-Gel Ballistic Gelatin to evaluate the performance of your rifle and pistol cartridges by measuring penetration and recovering bullets. It's superior to the ballistic gelatin products used today by law-enforcement experts. Perma-Gel replicates game-animal body tissue and muscle, will not decompose, and it is reusable up to 10 times with proper care. The Perma-Gel Kit includes 28 lbs. of Perma-Gel Gelatin raw mixture, a secured temperature roaster oven, glass divider, magnetic clips and instructions for melting, recycling and reforming the gelatin for repeated use. You can also purchase two replacement Perma-Gel Gelatin blocks separately for testing.

My web search did not find much info on this stuff. There are a few people who have used it. The most extensive of these tests can be found here.

This article includes the following statement: "PERMA-GEL does meet the FBI Ballistic Gelatin Standard of 2.95”-3.74” of penetration by a steel BB @600 fps when used at 55 – 75 degrees F."

Seems like an interesting product. It melts at 225 degrees and can be reused. I'm looking forward to finding out more about it.
