How do you determine what ammunition (particularly surplus) should not be fired?

Well, if there's a pretzel in it, then you shouldn't fire it.  In all seriousness, if the cases are deformed, like a massive dent/crushed/etc. it should not be fired.  If the neck is deformed, like one side was crushed when the bullet was seated (I've done that while loading my own), bullet in backwards obviously shouldn't be fired.  If it looks screwed up, don't take a chance.  MJD

If it isn't fresh from a well known ammunition maker, inspect, inspect, INSPECT!  If it IS fresh from a well known maker, inspect anyway.  Take a look at my post yesterday.
