I own 1:12, 1:8. 1:9 and 1:7 rifles and my ammo stash is 55 g Mil spec ammo from win or fed. It is not the best varmint load nor is it optimal for other applications but it is a good balance for all round performance, price and quality. That is why so many of us stockpile it.

I have rifles with 1/7 and 1/9 twists.
55-grain is the "common" bullet weight. It will function good in both twists. I would say to find a readily available 5.56 55-grain round (good luck!), and stack it as deep as possible. If you want to choose a heavier weight go with the 69-grain SMK loads, it will stabilize out of both twists. Your other choice could be Hornady TAP in 75-grain, depending how well it works in your 1/9 twist. As always YMMV. |

Winchester Q3131A (Israel) or the "new" Winchester Q3131 (USA). Federal XM193 (note: not XM193PD loose packed). either of those, in sufficient qty (say 2K), will get you through a real SHTF weekend with excellent terminal results from both weapons out to about 150 yds. ar-jedi ETA see www.ammo-oracle.com/body.htm#mildefense

First, I thought the XM193 did fragment? Did I miss another memo? Second, I don't plan on one-shot stops...if they happen, great. But I plan to shoot till the FF (f'er falls).
I have copious amounts of XM193 and WWB (Q3131) and another couple thousand of UMC 55 gr and Amer Eagle 55 gr..... |

the guy above was talking about Win White Box 55gr .223 SAAMI (as seen at Walmart), not "real" milspec or close-to-milspec M193 rounds like XM193 and Q3131/A. there is of course some velocity loss with the .223 SAAMI rounds and there is less data about the Win White Box .223 bullet construction; hence, there is somewhat subjective thinking that .223 SAAMI should not be depended on for defensive purposes. of course, at short shooting distances (eg in CQB/MOUT circumstances) it will probably work fine. but i load my SHTF mags with M193 (equivalents). are-jedi |

55 gr WWB is my drug of choice. Every time I go to WalMart I buy all they have, which is never more than 5-6 boxes. Problem is I shoot it almost as fast as I buy it. I rarely get more than a couple of hundred rounds ahead of my shooting habit.

i highly doubt you could tell the diffrence being shot with wwb or m193....
if live in a rural area i can see m193 for longer range shots but in a semi to heavly pouplated area wwb 223 is fine... seriously in a shtf situation why would you be takin 200 + yard shots? i would be gtfo"gettin the fuck out".......... and....................if i got i 22cal hole in me my main concern is gettin it fixed not continueing the fight unless i really have to.... people worry way to much about there type of ammo...... but if its really that important p/u some bh 68 grain blue box and call it a day just my 2cents......................"flame suit on"  |

No flames from me. We are on the same page here. I was just thinking as I re-read the title of this thread... Does anybody actually own just one AR? I mean when you get your first one you have just one, but you only have a solo AR for a little while until you get your next one, right?

Well, I only have one, but I have an almost complete complement of spare parts. Barrel and a charging handle and I could do a rebuild. I bought a bunch of XM193 from Wideners earlier this year and that's what I've put aside. Not shooting it. I usually plink with WallyWorld. I'm considering some Canned Heat from Georgia Arms. $85/500 and the shipping wouldn't be much since they're next door. About the same as WallyWorld, or a little cheaper maybe. I've got 400/500 rounds of various brands, BH, Fed Eagle, etc, but no great stash of any of them. Instead of another AR I decided to diversify and so ordered a FAL. At the moment I'm loading up as much as possible with South African before it dries up. May try some of the G.A. .308. Of course, until DSArms delivers all I can do is see how far I can throw the stuff. |

I have multiple AR's. some are old and unfired (1:12). I have no plans to use them, ever. The ones I hope I never have to use, except for fun, all shoot m193 or m855 just fine. Most of my 10,000 or so rounds are Lake City XM193. I do have some M855 that shoots fine also and groups well. I think most AR's will shoot M193 55gr. with good results, in a "I need to take care of business" enviroment. Therefore buy all you can. If stored properly it will last for years. The nice thing about buying Lake City ammo is the head stamp is date marked, unlike most commercial ammo.

I wish somebody (Black Hills) would load a Mega batch of the fairly new Sierra 65gr
Soft point and sell it cheap. This round would work well for us CIVI's as we don't have to follow NATO maiming and incapacitating rules. I am stocking up on this bullet and looking for deals. It should shoot ok in most twist barrels but may not penetrate as well as XM193 at close range. Any tests BROU or TAT? |

I probably have as much M-855 as I do M-193. Close to 1000 rounds of each + or -. I am now slowly switching to 68gr OTM from Black Hills. I buy a few of the 50 round boxes whenever I can and it will be a big part of my SHTF stock. I figure it's the heaviest I can shoot with my 1/9 barrels, though I have yet to try the 75 grain rounds.

If I had a 1/7 and a 1/9, I'd go with BH 68s. BHA blue box.
IMHO, reman is as good as the match stuff. OTOH, if I had an older 1/12 twist, I'd probably have to say LC 55s JMHO. Pic, out |

Same here. I went to a lot of trouble to get all of my 5.56s up to 1:7 (or 1:8), precisely so I could keep a common set of ready mags with the heavy stuff. In the real world, I also have cheaper practice stuff. |
