I mean, damn.  3 weeks ago Ammoman had Argy 308 for $189/1000rds shipped; and now

I see ammo for 20cents to 40cents per round.  Most in the high 20cent range.

I emailed Eric a little while back, and he said there was none to be found.

What's going on?

Edit: This is making me start to consider going back to 5.56 as my primary caliber . . .

Do you use once fired brass or new brass? What kind of reloader do you use? How much do you think it costs to make something comparable to m193 or surplus 308 per 1k?

Great idea Q; but it would take me quite some time to recoup the initial cost of a progressive

reloader.  I shoot quite a lot, but I stockpile even more . . . . . .

In that case, they have some at the Academy in Metarie, and at both Academy's in Baton

Rouge.

Back on topic though, anybody know where all the cheap 308 disappeared to?  It feels like

it practically happened over night . . . . .

The only decent price left on 308 that I know of is the South African 980 round case for $147 plus shipping from AIMSURPLUS.

BTW are you talking about the one Clearview in Harahan?

There is still plenty at the shows in Texas.

SA battle packs 140rnd 24 per.

Port battle packs 200rnds 35 per.

I usually dont buy ammo online it cost to much to ship.

At the last show in the New Orleans area the only ammo guy there was asking $32 for a 140 rd battle pack of SA.

If it's the guy I'm thinking of, he is a complete f@#k-off .  He always has some story about why

his ammo is so expensive; like, "it's running out, buy now, no more forever of this (place ANY

ammo here) !!   Dealers like him make me not want to go to gun shows anymore.

On the other hand;  will I ever see relatively cheap .308 ammo again???  I'm a little worried

here

I bought it all. And I'm buying the rest up tomorrow.  In a year I'd bet a lot of the true 7.62x51 will be as hard to find as good surplus 30/06 is now. [for a good price]

I just got 500 rounds of Lake City surplus ball ammo for $99.00 at the most recent gun show in my area.   This was 12/17/05.

When ammo gets hard to find then it's reloading time.

I guess 5.56 has finally taken over, including my future purchases

Wow!!! 35 bucks for 200 rounds of port is a damn good deal.

Local shop here in Vegas is selling 200 round can on links for 55.95 + tax.

I'd be buyin that up at that price.

+1!!!  Local sporting goods store in MI has it for $59.99+tax  I snapped up a few cans on sale at $29.99/can and hope they run the sale again. There's a lot of it sitting on their shelves at $60/200rds.

Do you use once fired brass or new brass?
FREE  range pick-ups, everybody leave it, very esy to distinguish new brass.  New brass for assembly would drive the cost per round over buying ammo in box.

What kind of reloader do you use?
550 DILLON since Aug 1988,  sold it, 650 in Oct 2004

How much do you think it costs to make something comparable to m193 per 1k?
How about M-855 spec @ close to $80/1000, compare at current price of  $199.99/1000 (XM855) as seen at local FFL tonight at 1750hr on way home from work.

How about same price (approx $80) for 1000 M-193 (had to back of powder a few 10ths (flat primers) leaving velocty at the 3200 fps mark, compare to current XM-193 pricing.

What is a person to do with all that svaed money?  Where's Clark Howard ?

For 223, I use brass that I've kept around from when I bought ammo, so I guess that would be once-fired.  I did buy a bunch of never fired deconstructed lake city 308 brass.

I use a Dillon 550B... like in the picture.

I guess it costs me about $90 to reload 1000 rounds of 223 FMJ.
I's probably about $160 to reload 1000 rounds of 308 FMJ.
It's about $100 to reload 1000 rounds of .45 ACP.

The biggest factor is the time it takes.  If the surplus market is doing well, it may not be all that cost advantageous to reload, but right now it's pretty good.  I like being in control of my own ammo quality, being a little more self sufficient, and of course having ammo that is custom loaded to my guns.

My 'best' since I wasn't looking to get 1k is a 200rd box of Port 308...

Unfortunately, it's LINKED...

Linked in mag58 links, which won't feed in my 1919 (once I get it built) and I do not have the mountain of money needed  to get my very own MAG...

So I will have 200 MAG/M60 links, and enough 308 for 10 FAL mags....

I thought I saw that stuff but I just rolled my eyes at the price. I'll have to see if it goes on sale myself at my local store. Don't know tho, the local store is run very poorly.

The thought of 7.62 ball reduced to the status of .303, 30-06, and others just downright

depresses me . . . . . .

And to think I recently really put my heart into 308's by purchasing lots of G3 mags, FN mags,

and some spare parts, and some (used to be) inexpensive ammo.  Oh, and another 7.62 rifle.

I thought 7.62 was on a comeback there for a while . . . . . . . . . . . .  *sigh*

Timing is everything.  I purchased several cases of Port and Hirt when it was down around $138 a case a few years ago.

Brass from that is reloaded again with the help of my RCBS Rock Chucker press.  The usual projectiles are either 150gr soft points or AP.

Of course, your .308 stash will last longer if you use a .22lr for plinking.  To my way of thinking, blasting away like crazy with 308 is wasteful of a precious national resource.  <realizing full well that some people will think that that is nutty>

I wouldn't get in a panic about it.  Like a lot of commodities it seems to by cyclic in nature.  One day there's an abundance, the next there's not, then it comes around again.
