Hello all.

I am thinking of buying a quantity of this ammo and am wondering if anyone has had any experience with it. It is 20 round boxed Sellier & Bellot SS109...green tip...62gr. steel core.

Most ammo I have used from this company has been top notch...I'm just wondering if anyone has had first hand experience with it through an AR. I'll be running it through a Bushy LEO marked Patrolman's carbine using Okay mags.

Thanks for your input!
Michael

I've used it before, as it was the second cheapest ammo after Wolf. over at the ammo-oracle however they warn of S&B's causing kabooms, you may want to look around for more info.

I bought a case of S&B 55 grain cartridges a few years ago and have had zero problems.  Zero malfunctions, zero pierced primers.

That being said, a match guy mentioned seeing a couple pierced primers with S&B.

Maybe all manufacturers have a bad batch occasionally?

I had purchased some S&B marked as M-193, but after cutting a bullet in half I discovered that it had a steel jacket with a copper wash  That was obviously not anything like M-193, and I chose to return it and exchange it for some Wolf.  Your SS-109 could be steel jacketed instead of "steel core".

I used to shoot a ton of that stuff when I could find it, but I haven't seen it around in a while. I've never had any problems with it and I've shot it year-round, from the hot-as-hell summer to the cold of winter.

I've got about 150 or so rounds of it left but I'd like to find more of it. Where is it available?

This is my favorite commercial SS109 ammo. Its accurate, consistant and very hot. It performs very well and is affordible. I have probably around 2k of this right now and I would have no problem using it as defensive ammo if I should have too. While I think that LC, IMI and Winchester M855 are probably the best, this would be a very close second IMO. There have been allegations of KB's which seems plausible considering how hot this ammo is, but I have shot thousands of rounds of the SS109 and hundreds of rounds of the "M193" type and have had zero failures.
I highly reccomend it.

It shot very well out of my Rock River DCM rifle.

1 inch groups at 100 yds and 100% function.

CTD used to always have it but not anymore.

I like it!

Shot well on two out of three ARs.  My Colt 20" pre ban and my 16" BM M4 loved it but the the BM 14 1/5" would not cycle it at all.  jammed about every third round.  Mabye it has a tight chamber ?  I don't like the jacketing material used in the S&B.  I will use up what I have left with the weapons that like it but won't buy more.

Where are you getting it?  I'd like to get some too if your source has it in stock.

I love the stuff. I use it in an AC556 and it functions flawlessly, accurate, consistant and fairly hot.

From what I understand the gentleman  has a whole pallet of the ammo ~80K rounds. He is selling it for $250 per 1K.

PLEASE READ THE AMMUNITION REVIEW THREAD TACKED TO THE TOP OF THE PAGE.

S&B is one of the ammunition types expressly reviewed there.

S&B ammo is usually steel jacketed, but the SS109 is a true SS109 copper jacketed bullet  with a steel penetrator in the tip.

I should have read the original post a little closer.  I was thinking of the dark green boxed 223.  I never saw that product before the pic was posted.  The price is still a little high for me.  Any idea of the head stamp date?

I got a few boxes of it a while back. At the time I was already having FTE problems with good ammo due to my weak extractor spring. It FTE every single round of the S&B. I replaced my spring and it solved all of my FTE problems with other rounds but I have not tried S&B through it yet. My rifle would probably handle it now but I doubt I will use it again. It might be ok stuff for plinking around but it is really no better than Wolf Polycoat.

S&B SS109 is some of the most accurate ammo we have tested, under 1 MOA with about 4 or 5 different ARs.  I have some and will buy more when it's on sale.

S&B SS109
FACT: It's loaded to M855 velocities. I've chrono'd it.
FACT: It has a copper jacketed lead core bullet with a steel penetrator tip.
FACT: It has sealed and crimped primers.
FACT: It has sealed projectiles.

Wolf is way underpowered and has no SS109 projectile.
Wolf  will not fragment due to its jacket design.
I have no Wolf on hand, so I can't comment on the sealed primers and projectiles.
They are, in my opinion, not even in the same league as far as performance is concerned.

The S&B SS109 has proven to be one of the most accurate rounds I have shot. Wolf, not so much. But I will admit every rifle will be different in it's taste for ammo.

When it First came out I sent some to Chuck Santoes to check out  I told him I thought is was not very hot and it Turn out I was wrong about it! 3184fps@25yards 14SD Hotter than M855 Plus accurate but not as accurate as Santa barbra

Minimum bid $250?  He can keep it for that price, I'll reload my own. Thanks for posting the link though.
