 I shot a new ar10 upper for the first time and had problems with Hornady TAP 155gr ammo. Multiple times, the primer fell out of the brass, and in 2 cases produced failures by getting stuck between the lugs and the chamber. Marks from the extractor can be seen on the brass. I also shot Federal and Win rounds, as well as several surplus ammo, and none had this problem. So, my question is, is the Hornady ammo defective, and I should contact them for replacement. Or, is it just incompatible with my ar10, but non-defective. I have no other 308 rifles to try it in. |

sounds like S&B brass to me. It wouldn't hurt to give Hornandy a call to see what they say

Does it work with other ammo? Does the Hornady ammo work in other rifles?

When reloading the 155 grain Amax bullet (same as in TAP) AR10s show the same kind of pressure signs (brass extruding into ejector hole, and loose primer pockets) way earlier than bolt guns. Sounds like Hornady is loading TAP too hot for your AR10.

I have heard of overgassing issues in AR10s that causes them to unlock to early, blow primers, screw up cases, etc. |

I would lean more towards the overgassing issue...I've only shot about 100 rounds of the new factory loaded 155 AMAX but did not have any problems at all. |

Yes, it was from my 20" AR10A4. The AMAX I shot was the new TAP in the black box...purchased about two months ago. |

Do you have any chrono data on your load? What velocity does it give on the side of the box from what barrel length? |

I had the same problem in my 155 Amax reloads as well. Cases looked just like AlanD's photo. I had to back off with WC846 to 2600 f/s and this is still a HOT load. No problems with surplus mil ammo or hand loads using other bullets. There must be something about the Amax design and bearing surface that gives high pressures. I doubt this is due to high port pressure for two reasons, I was using WC846 (BL-C2) the correct burning rate for port guns and the fact that the primer pockets are enlarged and there are bright spots on the case head indicates too high pressure. Premature bolt opening should not give these signs, usually you rip the rim and may have a primer back out. I’m seeing this with 2 AR10 20 inch guns, one SS and a chrome lined version. Rich V |

Just got done shooting 60 more rounds from my AR10 20" chrome-lined...cases all looked fine. The only wear mark was from the extractor taking some of the nickel coating off. |

I suggest you talk to both Hornady and Armalite. I would not assume an ammo problem. Sometimes semiauto 308 will work great with some ammo and not with another load, and the load showing the 'problem' is well within spec. I am not a gun expert, but I have seen instances such as this when I know positively the ammo is within spec,and the rifle works fine with other ammo. Maybe you can call it compatability. Jeff

I appreciate the follow up. Hornady contacted me yesterday requesting a sample of the ammo to check, and I ‘ll post their findings. My dealings with Armalite unfortunately recently have not been positive. Since the ar-10 functions normally with a range of other ammo, my plan was to have Hornady replace the ammo if found defective. Otherwise, I’ll hold on to it until I purchase another 308 (sounds like a great excuse to buy a bolt gun), or will sell/trade it.

Follow-up
I contacted Hornady, who requested that I send in a sample of the ammo I was using to be tested. After a few weeks, they indicated the pressures were too high for my ar10, and subsequently replaced the ammo I had from that batch with newer ammo (which they indicated was not as hot). I have not yet tried the replacement ammo, but was very pleased with the service I received from Hornady. |

thanks for the update. i had the same problem with some Winchester ammo and they also replaced it. the nice part was i returned about a 1000 rounds of the bad Q3131A and they sent me five cases of there 64 grain power point ammo. that is about $800 in ammo for a case of Q3131A that i paid about $175 for.
