They used to have power point and power point plus. Plus was moly coated and slightly different. I think its just one version now.

Thanks. Is it considered a good SD round for close ranges (within 100m give or take)? Would it be better served from a 16" 1/9 barrel or 14.5" 1/7 barrel? Or would I be better off with M193 round for 16" and something heavier (such as 75gr. .223 TAP) for the 14.5"? The Ranger is $.50 a round, BTW.

It is behind the 75 grain in terminal effectiveness and it has a poor BC so it sheds velocity fast. Its a good round but 75 grain is better for accuracy, retained velcity and terminal effectiveness. Id try some 75 grain in your rifles and see if they like it. If you get groups under 2" use that. If it wont group, try the power points. In terms of terminal effectiveness Id put it in order like this.
75 grain OTM 64 grain PP 55 grain M193 Start at the top and see what is accurate and reliable in YOUR rifles and select the ammo that works closest to the top in that list. |

That's what I suspected, but thanks for confirming it. I don't have a 14.5" upper yet, so I can't really test the accuracy with it, but I'm thinking about getting one. I'm still trying to decide on the twist rate, and since I already have 16" upper with 1/9 twist, I think it would make sense to get the 14.5" with 1/7 twist to be able to use heavier bullets.
What does "OTM" mean? I've seen this used several times, but cannot find the definition. Also, what is a good source for 75gr. ammo (available to civilians) and what's fair price to pay per round? Thanks again. |

Get Black Hills blue box for practice as its the least expensive and Black Hills red box for defensive use as it has unfired brass and sealed primers. Look online to get the best price. Red box 75 grain OTM is almost identical to 75 grain TAP and both use the same bullet.
OTM = Open Tip Match and is Hornadys description of the BTHP match bullet BTHP = Boat Tail Hollow Point and is the genric descriptive term for this ammo SMK = Sierra Match King and is Sierra's BTHP designation |

10-4. I'll check it out. One other important thing I forgot to mention is that I cannot practice with FMJ ammo at the range I go to - they have "no FMJ rifle ammo" rule, so OTM sounds like the way to go anyways.

Is this the OTM round?
www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=496167 I've also found .223 75 Grain Heavy MHP, .223 75 Grain Heavy MHP Moly-Coated, and 5.56 77 Grain MKCL - all in red boxes. Which one of the above is OTM? I think I'm getting confused...

MHP = match hollow point. In 75 grain its The Hornady bullet as they are the only manufacturer of 75 grain ammo. 77 grain MKCL is the Match King Cannelured (Siera Match King). You dont need Moly coated ammo IMO its a waste of money. |
