First off, I'm looking for those folks who have actually shot 73-77 grain bullets in 1/9 twist barrels, not armchair commando commentary. I'm well aware of the differences in terminal results between the various heavy match loads. Please only respond to the poll if you have actual experince with personal or issued firearms.

I have a 16" chrome-lined RRA barrel that I'm planning on trying some 75gr Black Hills in soon, and I may also have a line on some of the 73gr Berger loads as well. I'm not expecting 1/2 MOA, but hoping for 2MOA or better out to about 200 yards.  I was wondering what luck other folks have had with the 1/9 shooting heavy bullets. I'm more interested in results from chrome-lined vs. stainless steel barrels, but please tell me your setup, including barrel length and type.

ETA: Also, I'd like to know if you are shooting handloads, or factory ammo.

I've had excellent results with blue box Black Hills 75 gr moly. Best group to date is 4 shots in 1 hole, 5th opened it up to a 1/4 inch group from a DPMS 16 in heavy barreled CAR 15 at 100 yards.

About 50% of the people who try 75 & 77s in the 1:9s will have satisfactory results (satisfactory being defined by the shooter).

All 4 of my 1:9s shoot them satisfactory (meaning a maximum of a 4" group at 100y - three of them will do 2" at 100y).

Data Points: (this post is updated as people chime in) Ok so as of now we have 8 1:9 carbine barrels that WON'T shoot 75gr/77gr and we have 11+ 1:9 carbine barrels that WILL shoot the 75/77gr loads (the plus being Big bore has implied he's seen several 1:9s shoot the heavy OTMs).

I have 2 AR15s, 1 AR180B and a Savage model 12 BVSS-S (bolt action) with 1in 9 twist barrels.  all of them shoot the 75 and 77 gr bullets as well or better than any other weight.  As a matter of fact, the Colt HBar match (16" barrel) shoots 77 and 75 gr Black hills reman. ammo to less than 1/2" at 100 yds.  They are the best loads I've shot through the gun.  (Various 69 gr match loads are right up there as well).  The Savage shoots the same ammo into one ragged hole at 100 yds.  Same with the Federal Gold Medal Match 77gr loads.  From what I've seen it doesn't seem to matter much at 100 yds.   Maybe as the distances increase?  I don't have as much data yet but I will in the future!

I was a little curious myself so tried some hornady 75 bthp match bullets loaded light and worked my way up to max loading to see if velocity would play a role in how well it stabilized. Well, about 150 rounds later, all loads grouped between .75moa to 1.2moa ten shot groups at 100 yards. The gun was a bushmaster 14.5 inch m4gery with a noisy min-y comp and a 10x scope. The gun has always shot the heavier match loads well, but i was impressed with the 75's.

Through a 1/9, with 75-gr., I can usually get some that pattern but have keyholes, almost 3 out of 20-ish.

I have a 16", 1/9 twist chrome-lined barrel.  At 100 yards, 77 grain (Sierra match) blue box Black Hills fall within 3/4".  But at 200 yards only 1 in 5 shots was even on the paper, and at 300 yards not a single shot on paper.  Very strange.  I've had good success with PMC and Black Hills 69 grain match, consistenty within 1 moa or less at 100, 200, and 300 yards.  

I had good results with Hornady 75gr OTM in two different 1/9 barrels out to 300m in moderate temperatures.  Never tried them in very cold temps.

All of my guns were Colts with 1 in 7 bbls.  I was wondering the same as I was planning on buying a new AR and the only available guns in my area have 1 in 9 bbls.  I called Hornady and talked with one of their tech guys.  Asked him the magic question.  Will their 75 gr TAP load  work in a 1 in 9 bbl? Or do I need to try and track down another Colt.  His answer was, "We use 1 in 9 20 inch bbl guns to test all of our 5.56 mm loads.  We do not have a problem." Then he told me to go ahead and buy a Bushmaster.  

This was over 6 months ago, sorry I do not have a name so others can verify it.

Is there a difference at a distance? (300-600 yards)  I can not answer that as I do not shoot my 16" guns past 200 yds.  Most of my shooting is at 100 yds and in.  But I can keep it under 2" with my Colts and my Bushmaster, so long as I do my part.

I have a RRA 16" hbar that is NOT chrome lined and I shot 20 of the Hornady TAP 75gr (not 5.56) rounds with no keyholing at 50 yards. Accuracy was great for me. Meaning I hand held the rifle with iron sights and put in a 1.5" group.

I just got a box of 262 seconds from Cabelas that I will be trying, soon I hope.

That's kinda what I was expecting.  However, I've shot the heavy stuff out at 200 yds with my bolt rifle and it was holding some impressive groups with no signs of keyholing.  I'm off to the range tomorrow and I'll see what she will do at 300 and 400 yds.  

Supposedly Hornaday Vmax 75 gr are MADE for a 1/9.  Buddy of mine is reloading and Ive shot several different powder loads with the 75's out of a 20" 1/9 Bushy and can get 1 MOA easy @ 100 yrds.  With a 24" 1/9 bbl I can get them in the same hole (with a scope of course).  So yes with the correct head it can be done in my experience.  

the 77/75 grain Blackhills shoot great in my Bushys(20" and 14.5"), well under an inch. Both have a 1/9 twist
