The best Surplus 7.62 is Hertenburger  if you can find any.  The Portuguese and Aussy are great also. Sportsmens guide has 200 round belts of Portuguese in cans for around $40.00. The South African is great ammo for saving as it comes in sealed battlepacks.

Hirtenburger, Portugese [both in 200 round OD battlepacks] South African [140 round brown battlepacks] in that order.  Aussie is also good.  Indian is Bad, Very bad.  Anything not on the list is OK for Plinking, but not for SHTF.  A couple of boxes of TAP or something for immediate SHTF use...

I've got a couple thousand rounds of Aussie thats great for training and practice--very reliable in my AR10.  It doesn't do well at all though in the terminal ballistics department, so I've got 200 rounds of 155 grain TAP for that.  They shoot to almost the same POI, although the Aussie shoots to the left for some reason.

Grab all the SA you can find at good prices...there won't be any more when this is gone, and IMO it is the best bang for the buck today. Aussie is great, but considerably more expensive. Port in cased battle packs is also good, but not such a good deal at $.20 a round requiring de-linking I think.

+1,  I have shot a lot of SA, and never had a single problem with it. 980 rounds for 150 bucks or so is as cheap as you will ever find it. I'd bet in a few years 1K of decent Milsurplus ammo in .308 will be over 200 easily.

+ 1

If you're gonna buy for your new .308, buy BIG. At least 5K, more if you can store or afford it.

When all the mil-surp stuff is gone--it be gone! Years from now you'll be kickin yoursellf: "Why didn't I buy more!!!"

I remember good mil-surp just a few years ago less than $90/case!

Hell, my .308 ammo is a better investment than my mutual funds!!!
