What exactly is the difference?

What can and can't I do? For instance my WOA barrel is Wyde chambered...doesn't that put it right between .223 and 5.56?

The reason I'm asking is because my dad had some Winchestor 5.56 whitebox ammo that he was shooting out of I believe a Ruger ranch rifle...he thinks I can shoot it out of my AR...I think I can't.

I'm in need of a lesson.

.223 is loaded to commeracial or SAAMI specs,

5.56 is loaded to mil-specs, going to be hotter, generate more pressure. Thats why you should not shoot mil-spec ammo in a saami spec chamber.

Wylde chamber is inbetween the two and will allow you to safely shoot 223 or 5.56 ammo.

Ok...so if you had a .223 chamber you would not want to shoot the 5.56 however with my Wyde chamber I'm ok to shoot the 5.56?

If you had a 5.56 chamber I assume you could shoot .223...would it be as accurate...meh I don't think I fully understand yet?

You can shoot either in a 5.56 mm chamber, or a Wylde chamber.  You only want to shoot .223 in a .223 chamber.

Yes and Yes.....

The 5.56 generates more pressure than the .223, if you shoot a 5.56 in a chamber for a .223 you can get a over pressure problem, can lead to things like blown primer pocketts etc.

With a 5.56 chamber, you dont have to worry about that.

Hehe thanks for adding the L...looks like I misspelled that twice.

I thought of another question...is there any advantage to shooting 5.56 over .223 or vice versa...is one more accurate than the other?

I'm just trying to figure out why someone would want a .223 instead of the 5.56 or the other way around.
