Local Wally Mart had $3.xx boxes of this UMC stuff in 55gr flavor Metal Case.  Would it be more-or-less a safe purchase (fired out of a 14.5"/1:7)?

Remington UMC?

I tried 6 boxes at $3.50 each and found it to be OK. I think that the bullet is a flat base and the ammo is loaded to commercial pressure (3000 fps out of a 20" bbl). Good brass. I was getting 2 moa at 100 yards rested with iron sights.

I've been through a couple of thousand rounds of it, most in the old yellow boxes, without any problems at all.  I shot some of the same from the new green boxes on Sunday with no function problems.

Whether I buy UMC or AE 55gr (or some comparable brand) depends on price and availability.  They're all good.

It's good stuff. Not my favorite but decently accurate and very reliable. Shoots a little dirty but no big deal. I preferred the WWB to the UMC but it seems to no longer be available at Wally world.

Remington UMC Green/White box, 55 Gr. MC (L223R3) Good stuff, I have shot a bunch of it with no problems.

Thanks for that link man!  The T223F made nasty work of that gel.

Good ammo.  Loaded light but reliable and well made.  I once bought a 500 rnd case and shot it up.  It shot well if a little weak.  I don't buy it now because I can get other ammo much cheaper where I live.

Yellow box shot dirty, but accurate. Range qual ammo bought in bulk for S.O. Accurate, and lighter load than current batch of WW223R1.

I really like this stuff. I get it for $3.50/20 at wal-mart. Never had a problem with it. Shot apprx 500 rounds of it. Zero flaws

On the back of the box, it mentions a hollow point version. I have looked through many sites and I cannot find a place that sells the hollow point. Does anybody know where to get the hollow point version?

good stuff.  (green box)  i can get it local for $4 a box at walmart, and it'll do a nickel sized group at 50 yds. if you do your part.

i just recently bought a 40 rd. box of remington 50 grain hollowpoint at wal-mart for around the same price as the winchester 45 grain hollowpoint. it seems to be excellent shooting ammo in both my 1/7 twist colt 20" barrel and 1/9 twist 24" bushmaster. i just have to see what it'll do now on woodchucks as far as damage. but so far it's impressed me quite well.

I've been through almost a case of the "new" green box UMC 55gr MC .223 now, and it's functioned 100% in two different guns.  It's at least as accurate as AE223 or XM193, as I seem to be able to tag small targets offhand with no problems at 100 yards to contact range.

So it's at least as good as the stuff I used to shoot in the yellow boxes.

My current policy is to buy UMC or AE (or something substantially similar) depending on which is least expensive.  Since NatchezSS is out of the UMC, right now it's the AE.

Never tried the rifle caliber ammo, but have had problems with their handgun stuff. Mainly hard primers that had to be struck a second time to get the round to discharge.

Yeah, it's a good thing they put dye in the gel after the shot to make the temporary and permanent wound channel blurr together as one big wound.  Wouldn't want those silly civilians  to know that most of those rounds don't meet the minimum for defense.

At least they were honest about barrel length, most companies use a 24" .
