I know it's going to seem like a really stupid question but I really am curious what the experts know. How bad is the 52 bthp in terms of ballistic testing. Has anyone done this round?? It probably doesn't meet the 12" requirement. If it doesn't, does anyone know how deep it typically goes?
Flame away but it's only 3 grains ligher than m193 and supposedly the jacket is kind of thin on M193. Thus producing fragmenting. Are the bthp's alot thinner? Any info would be greatly appreciated. And you guys I know, 75 and 68 are a much better choice, but the curiosity is killing me!

I don't know if that testing has been accomplished by the ammo lab, but it seems to me that that is close to the preferred round for varmint/predator hunting and has very explosive tendencies...

It seems you are mainly interested in knowing about penetration. If so, you can build a Fackler Box and find out how well the rounds penetrate. You will not be able to see the wound profile, since you will be shooting plain water, but you will know about maximum penetration and hwo much the round fragments.
BTW, the round will penetrate about 1.8 times further in the Fackler Box than they would in calibrated ballistic gel, so adjust your figures accordingly. |

I don't have anything on that particular round. However I do have data on other rounds in the 50-53gr range. Their penetration figures run in the 8" range.

The light-weight match bullets don't fragment reliably. This is most likely due to the shorter bullets not having enough friction during the yaw stage to overcome their structural integrity. When they do fragment, they underpenetrate, and when they don't, they to comparitively little wound damage.
Remember: these aren't varmint rounds that are designed to expand; they are match bullets designed with one single goal: to put holes in paper really close together. The same is true for the 68-77gr match bullets; it's just a "happy little accident" that they happen to fragment and give us the performance we're looking for. -Troy |
